Introduction, New to flying

Morning Folks, just wanted to say hello. I am a new Sport pilot (38.5 hours)here in pennsylvania and have mostly flown in low wing LSA. Last week, I took my first flight in a j3 and then in a taylorcraft and i'm officially hooked on the tailwheel. This week, I begin learning to land the tailwheel. There is plenty of "backcountry" flying right here in pa and more grass strips than I ever imagined. So, with that said, in the near future I plan to own a kitfox or avid. The fun has just begun

Welcome to the Church of BackCountryPilot. We have a few commandments to live by. Love thy fellow board members, and save thy politics for other forms. Break these commandments and the head Pastor (moderator) will smite thee down! :D

Thanks guys, this is something I NEVER thought I would do. You see, heights are my biggest life fear. Some days I still get quite scared and anxious up there but in a way that feels so liberating. I race stock cars here in pa and have for 17 years. Now that im flying, the race car is soon to be headed out the door and replaced with hopefully a kitfox or avid.

Welcome! Those are great first planes (because there will be many). Stay anxious, it will keep you safe, the best pilot I’ve flown with was a Red Bull ralley car driver. There’s a ton of resources here on tips, techniques, and training as well as info on both planes. Good luck!

Welcome here.
I am also terrified of heights, but for some reason being in the plane doesn't bother me at all. I think you'd be surprised by how many pilots are scared of heights.

Rob, that is great! Haha.

The avid and the kitfox have grabbed my attention simply because you seem to get a lot of plane for the cost. Heck, I saw used ones as low as 14k

Re: Introduction, New to flying

You'd be surprised at how many pilots are afraid of heights. I'm almost paralyzed by heights--but not in an airplane. My Sis and I used to go backpacking together. She has no fear, so she'd sometimes lead me to some place that had a 50 or 60 foot drop-off--and I toughed through it until the time she wanted to show me a large petroglyph panel that required traversing a route that had a couple hundred foot drop-off. I had to tell her to go on by herself--I just couldn't do it.

But I've flown small airplanes at dizzying heights AGL, like at FL230 over Nebraska, without ever a qualm. I have no problem flying through the passes between peaks. But if I were to be standing on one of those rock outcroppings that I've flown past, I'd be frozen.

You'll get a lot of good advice here--with occasionally some crap thrown in. There are a lot of good pilots, and in my experience going to a few fly-ins, they're good people, too.
