iPad aps

I'm wondering if anybody has aviation iPad aps they recomend. I'm also looking for feedback on the legality of using the Jep sectional/chart ap. I keep getting mixed signals about the legality of being paperless. Some of the aps look promising for cockpit use but there seems to be about a million to chose from. If I could get some thoughts and feedback it would really help putting this Christmas present from the wife to use! Thanks

Re: iPad aps

I have renewed foreflight mobile 3 month subscriptions twice now on my Iphone and even dedicated some precious cockpit window space to the iphone and its mount. I would think the ipad would be even more impressive but I appreciated the zoomed out sectional on my iphone as I flew in the valleys between Weaverville and Benton this last Thursday.

In terms of legality, for IFR, I wouldn't consider going without current paper. For VFR, I like current paper (gives my friends something to look at), but would not feel any additional anxiety about getting ramp checked as long as my electronic charts were current.

The following I use on the ground.

Duat and Duats have apps for the iphone so I assume they have them for the ipad. I've also loaded and use MyRadar Pro, AccuWeather, and the Weather Channel. Yelp and Google Search are nice to have when you find out the restaurant you intended to eat at is closed (happens often, particularly when I'm flying with somebody).

I've loaded but no longer use Garmin Pilot MyCast and SkyRadar. I keep hoping SkyRadar would figure out a way to show traffic even if 15 minute delayed so I could judge the merit of buying their ADS-B receiver.

The iHUD looks kinda cool for LSA use, especially the Iphone 4 version.

You're part 91, you don't need paper. Period. You may want it but it's never necessary.

Re: iPad aps

I just bought an iPad 2 3G and put Foreflight HD on it. Holy Mole is all I can say! =D>

The weather and flight planning stuff is top notch. I've only flown with it for about an hour, but it's extremely cool to have the actual hi-res sectionals on there as a GPS moving map. The iPad interface makes it super-intuitive to zoom in and out and move around.

I'm a big paper chart guy, always having my thumb on the sectional, but with charts getting harder to find at many FBOs, this definitely feels like the future. Recommended!

Could not agree more Oregon. Howerver I don't have the Ipad 2 I have first gen. Wondering if you've used the 1st gen and can compare to 2nd gen.

Re: iPad aps

The IPAD is great, Have both Foreflight and WingX both are great! Wing X was kind of a waste for flying but they just updated the ap and it kicks butt now, both have there best uses. Have them both up and running and u can utilize both!
I have the first generation, using it since last fall.

I have both WingX and Forflight on my IPad and switch back and forth. Love the charts on Forflight. Trying to get comfortable using it as a kneeled, would like to figure out how and where to mount it. Flying a RANS S-7LS.

I believe that's what is in the icub correct?

Anyone tried geo referenced fore flight. Curious to know how accurate the taxi diagrams are.

Re: iPad aps

Hey I went with the iPad and foreflight and love it. I bought the little gps foreflight recommends and simply plug it into the iPad and presto: I've got moving map and geo-referenced approach plates. The updates are easy to use so you always have current charts. My friends with $30,000 panels really have something special; But for a few hundred bucks I've got something special too. I like the portability. The only things I've noticed is it does not seem to have a track line and I haven't found a legend for the charts. Otherwise, don't hesitate to go with this combo.

Re: iPad aps

I didn't save the link  because I'm not in the US but there is an app for XM on the iPad coming out.
I also have foreflight, for US operations it would be great. Someday I may get to try it out! Outside the US you can use a mapquest style map it has too. Better than nothing.
If you are IFR foreflight has the NOS approach charts, outside the US you would need the Jeppesen app which is only approach charts. For some reason they do not include IFR enroute charts for the iPad.

Re: iPad aps

In the eyes of the FAA the iPad is a Class 1 Electronic Flight Bag (maybe Class 2 if you mount it somehow). This Advisory Circular clearly states that completely paperless under Part 91 is legal...

http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guida ... 091_78.pdf

I'm using a 1st gen iPad with SkyCharts Pro which gives you access to all VFR, IFR en route, and approach plates. It also overlays METAR/TAF data if you have a data signal, has a basic flight planning function built in, and updates all the charts you have cached on the update cycle automatically. Relatively primitive compared to Foreflight but it does exactly what I wanted it to. Cost is one time $20 when you download the app, no further cost for caching/updating.

This still makes me laugh when I think about iPads in the cockpit.

I had my iPhone at 13500 for, er, 30 min last summer and my passenger was using it to snap photos plus I was using foreflight - no problems. I think any solid state device that doesn't have a little spinning hard drive will be pretty good at an altitude in the teens.

I'm pretty sure the alt limit is because of the thinner air and cooling problem. I'm wondering if any long term effect would come about due to overheating. I know there have been issues of overheat when people have had them in their cars on hot days. Do you think they have a "self preservation" system the will shut down the ipad before permanent damage is done?
