Re: iPad aps

no need for paper if part 91. I believe net jets or one of the bigger charter commercial operators just got approved to use the ipad too. they have to take off with at least 80% battery i believe. i use foreflight but love the ipad and am looking for new apps too.

I had my iPad at 29k' cabin altitude and used it for about 6 hours with no issues, I don't think you'll have any problems.

Love ForeFlight. I'm using the kneeboard / case from

www.mygoflight.com

and love it. I carry my iPad in it every day -- it is sturdy, well, made, protects device pretty well, easy to remove it when I don't want the case and rails on the bottom work really well for everyday use. I really like it in the cockpit although our cockpit is a little cramped with the yoke in the way, but nonetheless it works well. Also the magnets for the clipboard (that is mounted by magnet) are a great idea and work greag. Overall a great setup.

Breathing 100% Oxygen for 6 hours must have been mighty uncomfortable...

More likely you were at about 8000.

I was, in fact, at 29k' cabin altitude (aircraft altitude was over twice that). And yes breathing 100% O2 in a full pressure suit is uncomfortable, it really dehydrates you. When it's all said and done you're on it for close to 11 hours, takes me about a day to fully clear my ears.

At any rate, the iPad worked flawlessly - my only gripe is having to use a stylus because the gloves don't work on the screen.

Vick,

Search for "Telefingers"...iPad friendly gloves are becoming available, though I don't know of any that are MilSpec. Don't know how much protection they offer, or if they'd work in your office, but I'm sure there will be others available soon enough.

ipad/ badelf

Just completed a 1600 mile journey via airline and my 182 seaplane. I used my ipad and bad elf combo with foreflight and wanted to report findings.

In the airline MD-88 I think. I could barely get position signal in middle seat. Worked fine when I had a window seat with only occasional loss of postion problems. Cool to see 450kts in the descent.

In the seaplane it was fine and really never lost position. The foreflight charts are excellent especially for guys with glasses or tough time seeing stuff on a paper chart.

What really shines with the ipad for me is the weather planning tools of foreflight and fuel pricing maps displayed on the ipad. It would be better if you could get that displayed in flight.

My plane also has a 696 panel mount which does most of the same functions just not quite as good of graphics. I have to lean towards it to read the aopa data or current weather info.

The days of carrying a chart bag are over for me.

Is the Iphone 4 version out yet or are you using the Iphone 3 version? I see a disclaimer of sorts on their website that says

"A limitation of this basic version of iHUD is that the horizon depends on the on-board accelerometers only. This means that the horizon does not display the earth horizon as a reference of a vehicle in an accelerated attitude. It will display the acceleration of the vehicle only. Therefore, never ever use this version of iHUD for in-flight operations to visualize attitude other than pitch and roll. We are currently studying the possibility to mathematically model an algorithm to address this situation."

I wonder if the Iphone 4 version corrects this?

That is a tad bit different than what I had originally heard which was it used the rate of heading change along with ground speed to calculate bank angle. We can all see where that could go T/U in a hurry.

Question on Foreflight Mobile HD for iPad:

Does the full subscription version keep the aviation database locally on the device so that points on the chart are clickable (tapable)?

Yep. I hope they add Canada soon. I have most of the US including all of Alaska on mine, VFR, IFR with all approach charts, airport info etc. Pretty cool for dreaming up adventures while in the loo. It's all stored locally.

Re: iPad aps

I received my IPAD 2 a couple of days ago and loaded wingxpro7 app, Opitma Publications Pilots Guide app, Weathermeister( on line), Google Earth (on line)

The only short coming I found was that in flight planning WingX does not have drag and drop of arbitrary waypoints however they intend to release this option in May revision. They also offer a moving map sectional covering the entire USA and it is updated. The IPAD2 / Wingx offers at a glance mutiple screens options and views so on one screen you can see comm, runway, and moving map as well as buttons to change to photo or diagram of airport within a screen shot.

I have always been a big fan of Weathermeister so I continue to use their online site for WX even though WingX provides Aopa and A/FD, Naco charts, & Duats. I also signed up for Optima Publication new app for IPAD. I have been using Optima paper for years that IMHO has the best info on approaches to airports for the NW, SW, & CA. They all have caveats for liability purposes. With the pinch and spread tool onscreen the photos, text, and charts can be enlarged for us old guys who have to wear cheaters :D With the flick of a finger you can follow your course across multiple states without having 3 paper charts and say good bye to all the folding and line drawing.
I am new to Apple computer except for an IPOD and believe it when I say an old dog can learn new tricks. The process is super intuitive but they do have a help section that is easy to follow. I am really impressed with the technology and WingX also is set up for an ADS-B receiver. At this point a portable Receiver can be bought from SkyRadar for about $1000.00 but I keep thinking a portable Transceiver will be available sometime in the future hopefully.
