Re: Is diesel the future?

This is Sweet and should be a pretty cheap conversion. I was thinking of this for a 150 but now that I see it in a 172, I'm thinking Yes!

See the soot on takeoff in this video.. I like the idea. My friend did the numbers and thought it was to heavy.

Nothing new about this concept. These guys were doing it in 1931, set the record of 84 hours and 32 minutes in the air that held until 1986.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: Is diesel the future?

Yea, These engines are pretty dirty when you beef them up. I had the same engine in a 90 Jetta producing about 150 HP. It would smoke like a big truck when you got on it but that thing was a screamer!. Engine was reliable and worked great but it would eat clutches. Still got 38MPG around town too.

A newer TDI would be a lot cleaner. Neither has altitude compensation so you might need to do something about that.

Yea, it is a lot heavier. Just found the weights on the internet so...
TDI with starter, turbo & Alternator 348lbs
O-200 - 190lbs
O-300 - 268lbs

Look closely, that 172 has a black smoke trail behind it. Reminds me of a diesel Jetta circa 1980.

It has been a welcome sight to see both Diamond and Cessna getting into the diesel aviation game. If they could get the weight down relatively close to what my TSIO520 weighs, I'd love to have a turbo diesel in the 300-400hp range on my 206.

With an engine like that, seeing a light trail of black smoke is a GOOD thing.
