Hi Joe: Thanks for the info: I think the schedule is full and won't be that far east. I need to make this a 3 week trip. Not. The wife would divorce me and I would have to sell my plane.
You never know, maybe on the way north from Phoenix.

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

O well Rob, sounds like we will be a day off on the timing. I wish I could make the Truckee aktahoe inspired courses on the weekend but I am also committed. One day hopefully.

Right now Friday is still looking good weather wise. I am planning a stop at Owyhee and then Denio on the way down.

I will be chasin ducks on the weekends and flying during the week weather permitting.I will be in the Nevada area for a few weeks so give me a call if you are passing through on your return. Pops I have been curious about the hot tubs since I viewed your entertaining video. It sounds like a nice place to soak after a long weekend in the duck blind. I would love to give it a try.

Hi Paul: I will be doing some mid week flying too, imagine that. My buddy m7flyer and I are looking at Chicken Strip, Bacon Strip, Kern Valley. You might want to meet us? I'll let you know when and where.

Good day

Sounds perfect Rob, If you can, give me a days notice as sometimes it take a while for messages to get through. Weather looking good right now but with you and I both in the area I am sure some rain or snow will show up.

Safe flying

I just got back from a week in Saline Valley, WX was perfect! I'm a full time CFII at KHHR, I'd love to go for a run to Catalina, or the bacon strip, soggy dry lake, chicken strip, or a few other odd places. PM if you're in the LA basin.

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

Last time I visited Soggy Dry Lake it was pretty soggy indeed. Long time ago of course, may be totally different now, but just a note to be careful. We have had some rain recently.

Broadwell Dry Lake is a huge place to land in the middle of nowhere, and you can go a few miles south to see if the old strip at Ludlow is still usable. There are all sorts of abandoned military fields from WW2, some of them are probably do-able in a Maule. Go visit Giant Rock Lake and the old airstrip out by Landers, CA but do not go unarmed (some shady characters and cult nonsense was reported out there in Landers). The old Essex, CA military base is still identifiable, no idea if you can get in there but again probably in a Maule. Rabbit Dry Lake is listed on the charts, kinda neat because a major road goes thru the lakebed. If you really want to get out into Moonscape terrain go to the Cronese Dry Lakes northwest of Barstow but check the status of the restricted areas. IF the airspace is open I found (on Google) a really neat place in that area that I named Phantom Acres, it's a practice bombing range with a fake military base on it and a dozen derelict F-4's in various places. It would be a hoot to land there.

Sounds like I need you as a tour guide. I got the 8.50s on not the 29s I got enough fire power, not to worried about cults. Just conciser them moving targets if they mean to harm me. I am just kidding!!

Looks like I will be home in San Luis Obispo while the airplane is in maintenance from about the 9th to the 20 something. If anybody is in the area we can "do lunch". I may drive to the LA area for a day or two somewhere in there depending on how the honey do list is going.

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

I just checked... my cool find "Phantom Acres" is inside R-2524, which I am not sure is ever open.

But go check it out on Google Maps "Satellite View". Go about 25 miles north and slightly west of Barstow, CA, and look for three dry lakes right next to each other. Two medium sized lakes and one small lake in between them. These lakes are well East of the large dry lake that looks like South America (Cuddeback Dry Lake). I mistakenly called the 3 lakes the Cronese Dry Lakes but I had them mixed up with other ones... I think it is called Superior Dry Lake. No matter.

Go a mile or two north of the 3 small/medium dry lakes and zoom in, you will see an airstrip oriented SW-NE and a large rectangular parking ramp just north of the strip. Zoom in and you will see six or eight dead F-4's, some on the runway, some in the revetments, some in the big parking ramp. It is all a graded dirt (or "desert mix" pavement) simulated enemy air base for targeting and tac/nav practice.

Speaking of Cuddeback dry Lake, there is a small paved military runway just East of the lower tip of that lake. It was used for some helicopter testing back in the day, and it looks like a small municipal airport, but you will not be welcome if you land there. I had this strip marked on my chart (for an emerg. landing spot) at a glider race briefing once. An AF test pilot happened to see it, and took the chart right out of my hands and walked off with it!

I will miss the party. On the way to Nevada my Maule burned a hole in its muffler and then the cowling so I am grounded.

Hey Rick, I intend to come to your airport on this trip, it looks like a great area. It will be fun to meet you and 172heavy. I may do it as a day trip from Palm Desert.

As usual getting out of Oregon will be the trick. Right now Friday looks good. But it can change 5 times by then.

Cheers...Rob

Just give me a heads up, We have a spare bed room, if you don"t mind model airplanes here and there, the chicken strip is a short hop from here. We could all get together for dinner at my place. :D Joe AKA 172Heavy

Sounds great Joe. I love model airplanes and I got my sleeping bag. Would love to stay at your place, but don't want to impose.

Text or PM me your number. I should be at Kern by 1-2

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

Hey, to the Maule owners out there, re the mufflers on the 540 engines.
The service letter relating to the tailpipe clamp inspection includes removing tailpipe and checking the flame trap.
If its compromised by overheat (too lean), or vibration (incorrect mounting), it burns away and the downpipe flames now burn the muffler can.
Flame traps are replaceable.
Not related to Rob's trip but an opportune thread for this note.

Rob check local winds as you get closer to the LA area and desert. It's pretty breezy here right now.
