Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

Had a great time today, Russ and Pat joined us so we had 6 souls and 3 planes for Breakfast at Mojave air and spaceport. Then on to the Chicken strip for a soak and a hop over the tall hills to Kernville. Had a visit with Rick and Joe there before the flight back to Whiteman. Then get home and found we left the camera in the plane, :( DOH! So Rob will have to supply the visual aids to this part of the trip report.

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

The Giant Rock story
Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert near Landers, California, that covers 5,800 square feet (540 m2) of ground and is seven stories high.

In ancient times it was considered sacred by the Native Americans of the Joshua Tree, California, area. In the 1950s it was a gathering point for UFO believers. It is located on land which was at that time leased by George Van Tassel, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of UFO conventions.[1] Van Tassel also built the nearby Integratron and a small airport in the vicinity, which he operated from 1947 to 1975. A single large room, which was subsequently filled in, was dug beneath the rock and resided in by a prospector named Frank Critzer during the 1930s and early 1940s. Critzer, a friend of Van Tassel's, perished in a self-detonated dynamite explosion in this room on July 24, 1942, while being investigated by local police.[2] Shortly after the turn of the 21st century, Giant Rock fractured in two, revealing an interior of white granite. The entire exterior surface of the rock is now reportedly covered in graffiti.[3]

Hey Rob, I'll be here tomorrow night if you're interested.

The January meeting of Thunderbird Field EAA Chapter 1217 will be held Thursday, January 19th in the Scottsdale Airport Terminal Building. The time is 7pm. This month’s guest speaker will be Dr. Mike Pfleger who raced his AT-6 at the Reno Natonal Air Races this year.

We also will be going over how to get involved in this years Cactus Fly In March second and third. Also we will be discussing the tremendous grassroots response we had with our Grapevine Restoration Challenge! Remember guests and potential new members are always welcome!

Hey Brian: that would be interesting. I'll be at Barrett Jackson with my friend I am staying with. I don't have a car so I am stuck so to speak with them. If we get back to the house in time I am only 1.5 miles west of Scottsdale airport. I could probably get there.

Also I plan to go hit a few dirt strips with Rich that might interest you. You probably know some too. We will probably get dinner every night if you want to meet then.

Cheers...Rob

Re: January 6-22 Or, Az, Ca, Nv.

Rob, while you are in sunny CA/AZ the rest of us poor saps are back here in OR sand bagging our flooded rentals. As I was placing sand bags today, I was thinking of you, was wondering if your wife was sand bagging your rentals while you are gone?

Wish I was there with you wearing flip flops, shorts and tee shirts!

Hope there is a break in our bad weather on Sunday for you to get home!

Waiting for my mufflers from Altree Dodge, still flying the Citabria.

No flooding at our rentals. The power was out for 2 days at our house and business. Got it back today. It is very nice here, dare I say perfect? 70* no wind.
