Jimmt Buffett Departure

Aviation Departure Procedure Named After Buffett

An aviation departure procedure out of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in West Palm Beach, Florida has been named after Jimmy Buffett, and includes waypoints with his name and related words.

The BUFIT ONE Departure, as it’s called, is used for standardizing routes for aircraft taking off from Palm Beach and departing to the south. Obviously this is a route that Jimmy himself is likely to take often.

The procedure calls for flying to waypoints with the names JIMEY, BUFIT, FINNS, PYRUT, and UTLEY (referring to Michael Utley, Jimmy’s long-time keyboard player). Aviation waypoints are five letters long, hence the funny spellings.

Buffett has kept his airplanes at Palm Beach International for several years. Learn more about Jimmy’s flying and see his airplanes here.

I'd love to see his face when "vote for change" winds up making him pay a takeoff tax or a user fee !

Actually, I've never wanted to be wrong so much in my whole life...

I love that Albatross, but didn't he wreck that thing awhile back?

No. I think it was a Widgeon. If I remember correctly he was taking off and he caught a wing float.

Jimmy Buffett is awesome. I keep my XM tuned to Margaritaville while flying. What can I say, I'm a Florida boy!

The Albatross is on permanent display at Universal Studios in Orlando. It sits across from Margaritaville and has little tiki hut tables where you can order food, beers and of course margarittas. Awesome place. I was told by the wait staff that he didn't want to insure it anymore. Don't know what the truth is behind it. This was shortly after 9/11.

HA - don't forget who proposed user fees to begin with - good ol' GW - oh, and the Patriot Act, wasn't that another great freedom to fly inspiration! I think Jimmy is wiser than you think...

Re: Jimmt Buffett Departure

He wrecked a widgeon on departure from Nantucket Sound. The Hemisphere Dancer is his HU 16 Albatross. He has retired it to Orlando. He got shot at by the Navy in Jamaica with the Dancer. He has a Falcon 900 jet, a Stearman, and a Cessna 208 on amphibs. I think when he first started flying he had a Lake Amphibian and then a 185 or 206 on floats, too. He is an avid aviator.

Bar rules, boys. Let's keep the political banter to a minimum and if you do have to spout off, keep it cordial and funny. Something like, How do you know when politicians are lying? Their mouth is moving.

Being a U.S. Navy guy, I have to correct the record. The Jamaicans shot at him, not us.

I love Jimmy and all he stands for, but did anybody read "A Pirate Looks at 40?" It's an autobiography about him flying the Albatross and reflecting on his life. I had to put it down after about 50 pages. Somehow a millionaire flying an Albatross to the Carribean with a professional pilot in the left seat being paid to keep him out of trouble somehow spoils the aura and persona of the beach bum and his guitar. Mr. Buffett, if you are reading, sorry. You still rule!

The Hemishpere Dancer is also the name of Frank Bama's salvaged Grumman Goose in "Where is Joe Merchant." That is a great read and quintesential Jimmy Buffett.

Re: Jimmt Buffett Departure

I see where they have also added the IVNKA departure with intersections like TRMMP and AMNDA on it.
Somehow I can relate to Jimmy a bit more than Ivanka.

I didn't mean to imply our US Navy shot at Buffett, It was the Jamaican Navy Drug Interdiction Force. Buffett went on to write the song Jamaica Mistaka.
