Johnson Creek Fly-In Camping Tips

That was my first trip up there so forgive me my first-timer enthusiasm. The old hands already know all this but there are a few things I wish I had known before heading up to Johnson Creek. Here's a few things I learned that I want to write down before I forget. Might help some other first-timers out there too.

- Scotchgard your sneakers before you go.

- Your windscreen WILL be fogged up first thing in the morning.

- Sunscreen.

- Don't bother hauling in water. The water there could be bottled and sold in snooty restaurants. However, you may want to bring along a jug to haul some home with.

- Bring something cool and comfy to wear during the day. Bring something warm and comfy for when the sun goes down. If she likes flying, so much the better.

- Do NOT underestimate the quality of food you will encounter at the Saturday night potluck.

- Buy more than two raffle tickets. The prizes are incredible.

- Don't bother carrying your chair around, someone will offer you one.

- Consider having your gear shipped to the maintenance shack at JC. Carry only items needed for the flight. It will magically boost the high-altitude performance of your airplane. Pay them to ship it back to you. Don't forget to leave a generous donation as well. They do an amazing job maintaining the camp.

- When your buddy tells you NOT to bring it in right over the trees at the approach end of 17 and land short, listen to your buddy. Otherwise you'll have to taxi uphill for quite a while. There was way more stopping power on that runway than I would have anticipated.

And if anyone else has some good HUMINT, feel free to add it.

Very good notes!

But, what if everybody decided to leave their chairs behind next year? :D

Also, the store in Yellow Pine is usually stocked with most essentials if you want to leave behind a few more pounds of stuff.

It seems like a lot of people do. The Maintenance folks seem to have whatever you need to borrow. I donated my way-too-heavy tiedown anchors that I made. They way about 30 pounds! Next year I'll just call and see if they still have them and use them rather than hauling more tie downs in.

Re: Johnson Creek Fly-In Camping Tips

I would say to (please) be GENEROUS with your donations.... @ any of the Idaho back country strips that have provisions for donations. A whole van load of us went in to YP (couple yrs ago) and only about half of us ponyed up for the van use.... and we more than covered it, but we should have ALL donated at that level.
Be aware that those of us who show appreciation in the way$ that really matter.......well, it certainly is not all of us, so like everywhere else in life, those that "do" donate generously, have to cover for those folks that "don't" (some at all).......

Unfortunately just a fact of life.....

Yeah, it's like going out to dinner with a group, and having someone either ignore the tip pot or get out their calculator to calculate exactly their 8.5% tip, when everyone else has kicked in enough to cover 20%+. I find it pretty annoying, especially because often the ultra-cheap tipsters can afford a whole lot more than I can--and the waitress sure can use the money.

LOL! Your spot on with that post.

I know a few MX riders that also seem to forget their wallets when it comes time to pay the bill. And your right, it always seem to be the ones with the most money in their bank account that cheap out.

Even though most restaurants want to do one check for large groups. Sometimes the servers will make out better (tip wise) if they do separate checks for individual guests at one table. Because then Mr Cheapo will get his own check. And most everybody will leave 15-20+% anyway. I'm a 20+% tipper for good to excellent service. Even if the food sucks.
