Johnson Creek ID, June

Hello All,

I am Johnson Creek bound this summer, June 18-28. I am making this long haul from Maine starting out as a two plane flight, but would be more than happy for others to join. I have the flying Idaho books but I would like to meet up with some people who have flown this area before, or just anyone who wants to tag along. I am looking for recommendations on some must visit spots. I am flying a tricked out 182, however it is still a nose dragger so I am still a bit limited on the landing surface.

Hey Kyle,

I saw your other post and was excited to hear you were from Maine as I am in Carrabassett Valley. This trips sounds awesome and at a great time of year. What do you have planned so far?

Hey Matt,

It is going to me myself in a 182 and a friend of mine possibly in a Comanche 180 possibly in a 182. We are unsure of the exact plan but we will be leaving the morning of the 18th and hope to end up at 3U2 at some point. We are planning one overnight at KOSH on the way out, as there is a hotel on the airfield. Thats all we got so far.

If you're going to have camping gear, consider 6Y3 instead (or in addition to) Oshkosh. Great little place.

How are the black flies up there, not that its a deal breaker as we are from northern Maine, but I am just curious.

JC is my Happy Place. Worth the trip from practically anywhere. Hope to see you there. No tailwheel required. Indeed, for 90% of the usual backcountry ID strips, no tailwheel required.

Don't miss breakfast at sulphur creek. Big creek will also start having breakfasts. All within 10 miles or so of Johnson creek.

Your 182 will do about 90% of the strips in the area. Your confidence and ability determines the 90%. Watch videos. Fly the right speeds. I live on cascade lake which is right next to all this stuff

Feel free to contact me if you need anything.

Here's a link to a vid I took going into JC. If you touch my channel underneath the title (idahobackcountryflying), you can see most of the other strips as well including sulphur, big creek, lower loon, soldier, cabin etc.

Thanks for the reply, I am excited to see a lot of these strips. Well I will be out there around the 20th of June, I'll keep my eyes out for you.

Its not nearly as impressive, but this is some backcountry flying in Maine. This is an old logging road just to the North East Carry.

But you are right fly the pitch attitude that produces a steep and stabilized approach, even a Cherokee can do it.

Nope, I'm going the 2nd - 16th. Had a great experience last year getting in and out before the crowds. Everything was green and beautiful. More risk of cold nights, but that's a tradeoff I was happy to make.

Is the Wisconsin husky and the other plane joining you June 2nd? I met your group at spearfish on your way home. I might meet up with some of you during that time frame. I fly a red and white husky.

That's the best time to go! I love cold nights with a fire and no huge crowds.

I'm going out on the 2nd, the other guys will join me on the 8th. The Husky will be there. So will the 170. I don't think the Skywagon will join. Adding a SuperCub (IIRC, some kind of Cub anyway).

Re: Johnson Creek ID, June

Sure you are welcome! When you arrive you may have to go through the re education camp for a half of a day. By the time they are done you will be asking how soon you can convert. :-)
