JPI Vs EI

Since purchasing my C180 a few years ago I have installed a few single function JPI instruments (fuel flow, EGT, CHT), but am now upgrading my panel and will be replacing all of my legacy engine gauges with the Electronics International MVP-50P. After (finally) getting my JPI 450 fuel flow gauge dialed-in it has performed superbly; out of 79 gallons usable the gauge is usually accurate to within less than 1 gallon when topping off. The MVP-50P also includes a fuel totalizer function, but I don't have a feel for how it performs compared to the JPI. Anyone have any experience between the two?

Re: JPI Vs EI

I have an EI fuel transducer cube and EI EGT probes plugged into AFS box for a Rotax engine. I have replaced one probe and one fuel cube within 50 hours. EI whined a little bit about both (gee that never happens), but did replace so no complaints here. Can't speak to JPI.

Re: JPI Vs EI

Got the JPI 450 in my 180, it came out of the box spot on always within a gallon. Put the EI CGR-30P in our PA-18 3 months ago, and love it overall, but as far as the fuel totalizer it's off by 5-6 gallons by the end of a 36 gallon tank. It's strange because the fuel flow is right on the mark but the total burn is way off. I'm yet to figure out how to adjust it, haven't really tried...

Not sure if the -30P has the same fuel flow system as the MVP-50P but hopefully yours is more accurate from the get go.

Skaly, you might try recalculating the unit. Something has to be off. Perhaps with how you are adjusting the k factor? I installed the MVP-50 and have put 150hrs on it now. The numbers are pretty dead accurate and Im loving it. Overall I have found my dealings with EI to be more than amazing with great support. Would recommend.

Re: JPI Vs EI

I have been very happy with my EI instruments. Calibrated my fuel flow to within .01 gal for a 18 gal tank.

Thanks for the positive responses. I was concerned about maybe keeping my JPI FS-450, but now after hearing your feedback I don't think that will be necessary.

Re: JPI Vs EI

Another happy CGR-30P user here, with close to 50 hours on mine. I think you'll like the MVP-50P.

My one irregularity is that when I was fueling last summer from my portable tank with a short hose and a GPI digital fuel meter, the GPI and the CGR were perfectly synced. Then this winter, fueling from a bulk tank with a much longer hose and an analog Fill-Rite meter, the CGR always reads a few gallons higher than the Fill-Rite. Changing out the Fill-Rite meter didn't resolve this. (Dipping tanks doesn't really help either, since the attitude is different on ABWs and skis.) Curious to go back to my summer setup and see if it's still well-synced or not.

Re: JPI Vs EI

I have been running a JPI-FS-450 for five years and other than an initial adjustment to the "K" factor it has been flawless. It is within a fraction of a gallon on a full fill up. In fact the variance is most likely from my filling consistency than its variability.

My only regret is that I did not "go cheap" when I installed the EDM-700 in 2001 without the fuel flow option.

Re: JPI Vs EI

I don't have any experience with the "all in one" instruments of either company. I have two EIs, a volt/amp meter, and the EI FP5L fuel flow meter, which is very accurate. It did take adjusting the K factor when it was first installed several years ago, which took 2 or 3 fill-ups to accomplish, but the adjustment is fairly easy to do. The sensor failed after several years ("Gee, that never happens"), and the used replacement failed within days. The new one which was installed last Fall is still working well. Good support from EI, even with the "Gee, that never happens" response. According to my IA, who has installed a number of both EI and JPI gauges of varying types in a number of different airplanes, EI's customer support is better than JPI's, although both make good instruments.
