IMHO the key should be removed, not just turned off.
Whether placed on the glareshield or elsewhere (I hang mine on the altimeter knob),
I think removing the key is less easy to forget than just turning it,
it also makes it easier to see at a glance that the mags are off.
BTW it's the first thing I do when the prop stops turning
FWIW I think it's easier to forget this kinda thing when something out of the ordinary is going on--
kinda like having to turn your airplane around by hand.
Just like something distracting or interupting your pre-flight,
pre-takeoff, or pre-landing checklist--
makes it easy to miss something.
