I'm curious why changing the tail number on a 47 year old airplane seems to be a high priority item?
(can you tell I'm not a fan of "vanity numbers"?)

Probably the same reason he owns an airplane - because he wants to.

I'm cheap and one of those enviro hippies so I went with 0.028" Kydex V which is recycled material. It is textured, one side glossy texture, the other is matte. I use the matte side as the "good" side but that's just visual preference, both sides are nice. Also, easy and quick to get through amazon. Just looked and it's gone up in price since I purchased. I paid $90 for nine 24x48" sheets last year.

thanks, I'd like to give it a try and see what kind of results I can come up with.

Re: Just another low-life Maule pilot

When I bought my C180, it had a vanity number featuring the initials of a previous owner.
FWIW he sold it within two years of "branding it" as his own.
He changed the number in 1986, I bought it in 2014.
There were several owners in between.
I'm sure all of us got tired of hearing "so what's the JB mean?"
(I used to tell everyone that the inventor of JB Weld used to own it.
A buddy of mine told people that the FB on his tail number stood for "Fat Boy".)
It took some waiting, and doing, but I was finally able to get the original tail number back.
A few of my friends went through the same drill.
I can see doing a vanity number on a homebuilt, but as a guy I know likes to say-
we are just the temporary curators of these fine old airplanes.

I would venture to say that needing the original N # is no different then a vanity #. I'm used to getting whatever because we use C#s, but i enjoy picking my own when I can. To each his own, no need to complain about others choices.

For your kydex interior are you putting any insulation behind the kydex? If so, how thick and what kind? If not, do you figure the insulation properties would be lost in a tube and fabric plane or are you disregarding insulation because of weight?

I'm not putting any in but if I did, I'd go 0.25"-0.5" closed cell foam. I think gluing it to the back side of the kydex would also give the kydex a less "plastic-y" feel with a bit more structure and damping on them, although they arent bad as-is.

Re: Just another low-life Maule pilot

Mostly done with the boot cowl window. There was some hesitation taking a cut-off wheel to an airplane, but then I remembered it’s a Maule and it likes pain.

Layout. You can see where there was an avionics cooling duct mounted there, so I had to shift the window forward a bit to get rid of all the holes. Had that not been there, I would’ve put it aft about 2 inches.
Image

All the holes transferred. I made a smaller mock window in the scrap to test my corner drilling and cutting techniques and get a feel for it.
Image

Cutting complete. The angle of this pic makes it seem like that forward tube is really in the window, but it’s actually directly in line with the forward edge so it’s not in sight when looking through. Blue zip tie is for fashion.
Image

Dry fit of the window and stiffeners. This is where it’s at now, going back tomorrow to seal it up and put all the screws in.
Image

I made a template of the necessary cutouts in the interior panel but making it all fit seems like a hassle.

Re: Just another low-life Maule pilot

Thanks! Got it wrapped up today. Decided to re-use the original interior panels, they just fit so well already. Made some pieces of kydex to fit between interior and window but didn’t get a pic of them attached.

Re: Just another low-life Maule pilot

Just curious for when my landing lights need replacement on my MX-7, but what did you do for the log entry on the Aero-lite landing lights? I am assuming not using a 337 for that? Also, your boot cowl window is looking pretty spiffy, its on my list to do this summer.

In my opinion, and my mechanic’s, replacing an incandescent bulb with LED is a logbook entry and can be done by the owner. No STC required. Not all agree. I keep my incandescent bulbs on the shelf in case a future mechanic disagrees.

Looking good, I’m anxious too hear what your thoughts are on the window after flying/taxiing. I did my lights under the same thought and so did my mechanic. Keep the pics coming.

Very nice, Asa. I reached out to you about your Scout but was not prepared to pull the trigger (finances/taxes). Did the past owner let you know why he barely flew the plane?

He also owned a 7GCBC and since most/all of his flights were local hops, the 7GCBC was just easier. He was thinking the Scout might replace both of them, although he didn't have immediate plans to sell the 7.

Also, big development, today I purchased an M6 fuselage, powdercoated, all the mods welded in, ready to cover. It is used but was rebuilt by Maule in their jig, all float mods, super skylight, large rear patroller windows, metal stringers, etc. When I get back from Alaska in late summer, this plane will be transformed into a unicorn - the longest Maule wings on a light M6 fuselage. Will be covering it in Oratex, overhauling the engine, and building what I hope to be a fire breather. Many people will say I shouldn't deprive the world of a long wing M7. I say I am not depriving the world of a long wing M7, I'm birthing a long wing M6. Maule factory "mod kits" are a wonderful thing.

That looks like a great foundation for an experimental “maul”
