Waiting for a couple friends to workout some computer glitches on an engine monitor a couple days back in Valdez, I glanced up at the glacier and saw the clouds dropping on the pass....
Gently nudging our accomplice, I pointed towards the pass and declared, it was now or... Maybe tomorrow...
Lining up as a flight of two I poured the coal to the pponk, and crossing the numbers on the west end I was pleased to see the meter passing through 2000' AGL....
An immediate turn towards the pass had us sliding through with MAYBE a few minutes to spare...
God bless Steve Knoll declared Coleen ...
Me? I'm just happy to have bought in to the hype :-)
FWIW... The number two ship was an impressive BH that didn't break a sweat doing the same ;-)

Congrats on the plane!
Take care, Rob

Oh I know... I watched it all live on Facebook. Way to perpetuate the hype!

Re: Just buy a Skywagon

Saw your 170 down at Calaveras Airplane Co. Good call having those guys do work . They have a wealth of knowledge anout the kind of abuse these planes take and are very honest about what it takes to keep them in top shape . Have fun with that new to you 180 !...... If you have any more kids you will need a 206

Congrats!

I got a little time in your plane when Gary had it. Nice flyer with light controls. Hope you enjoy it.

Re: Just buy a Skywagon

Way to go Rob and Stacey!!! The smile in that first picture says it all. It will be fun to watch what Rob can do now that he has the horsepower needed to takeoff from some of those places that he used to look at and think "I could land there......"!

What the...? This is actually good for me - now I don't have to tell people that my friend in California can out short field land me and take-off shorter in his stock engine 170 than I can in my 180hp version! Congratulations!

Congrats Rob!!! 203AK was high on my list, just a bit over my budget. Great bird for you and your family. You will use her just how she wants to be used.

Glad to see her stay in the BCP family!

Did you buy it from a guy up at Orcas?

N79A !!! Sweet N number. Probably doomed to have ATC ask for your full call sign every time that's gota be a pretty rare number.

Re: Just buy a Skywagon

I can take a pretty good guess as to how that tail number came about.
The original tail number for that airplane (going by s/n) was N2879A.
At some point in the past, someone got a N180xx vanity number for it, meanwhile the original number was reissued. When a later owner tried & failed to get the original number back, he settled for the last two digits.

My own 180 was given a vanity number back in the late 80's, and the original number issued to a Husky. The Husky has since been wrecked and de-registered. Unfortunately, as I found out when I tried to get it, when an airplane is de-registered (often due to the owner dropping the ball on the 3-year re-registration thing), there's a 5 year hold put on the tail number. The hold on mine is due to expire in about a year & a half, at which time I'll get it back. A friend of mine is going through this on a C195 he just bought--luckily, the 5 year hold expired just after he bought the airplane.

Personally, I dislike the going the vanity number route on a vintage airplane. IMHO having the original tail number is much cooler. Quite often, we're only just the temporary caretakers of these fine old machines-- putting your initials on one is kinda like graffiti-tagging the Sphinx. Unlike most performance or utility mods, it's sure nothing a later owner is gonna appreciate.

Or it could have gone to Canada for part of its life. Thats what happened with my 170. When it came back to the States from Cananda the original N number was no longer available. So it was registered as 560C. When I refurbished the plane a couple years ago the original N number was available again so I got it back, N4560C.

My 180 has a vanity number but I think it's a good one. Now when I fly it to Alaska I'll fit right in!
