Heading up today but may leave early Saturday. Weather doesn't look to good late Sat or Sunday.

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

I've been all packed and ready to go but those forecast winds would take the fun out of it for me.
I hope they have another one soon, they really put a lot of work in to preparing and planning.
Maybe the weather will be acceptable but it is just too far for me to have a look-see.
So, I just bought some raffle tickets on line to support them.

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

We were packed and ready to go Friday, but the forecast and our weird coastal weather this year
shut us down. It didn't clear here at SMX to get out of the valley until 2 pm and then the wind and return
weather forecast had us staying home..........AGAIN.

Its blowing 29 knots here today and forecast to rain and blow tomorrow.

Here's hoping things improve by Memorial Day!!

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

Hello All,

I did not have any weather issues since I drove in... :P

I arrived Friday around 3pm and by then there were already 10 or so aircraft on the field with some out flying. Fridays weather was not bad and just a light breeze in the evening. Since I did not fly in I was invited to tag along in a C180 to Carvers cut with a hike after to the 7 teacups. Unfortunately due to the weather the couple decided to head home immediately Saturday morning so I spent y day just hanging out and such. I still had a great time and Kelly and his son Kyle kept me company. I had met Kelly the previous summer in Bend Oregon where he took me for a tour in his MauIe so it was great to run into him again. Everyone who put this flyin on did an extraordinary job even with the last minute weather issues. I met a lot of new people and made many new friends. I donated a few of my Camera Mounts to the raffle and they were won by a champ owner and a Maule owner. Below are a few pics that I took and while i did not get out with the group for some back-country adventure, Dustin took me out in his C120 for a tour of the lake Saturday evening which was great. I hope I can attend this next year and will hopefully have my own plane by then. I have about 50% saved for a C170 or Maule M4.... :P

I have been away form this group with a new job, but hope to contribute more again.

Thanks again to everyone for such a great experience.

Best regards,

Marc

Thanks for the great photos Marc. I'm really pissed that I didn't make it, but I was weathered in in the LA basin. I managed to take off early, squeeze out through the Newhall Pass at powerline height, but the entire quadrant from the Grapevine (Tejon Pass) all the way east was a solid wall of cloud with mountains hiding inside the clouds. Back on the ground at Whiteman airport at 7:15 AM, pissed off the rest of the day.

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

It was a great fly-in, even though we didn't do much flying after arriving. We got beat up pretty good coming down the east side of the Sierras on Friday, but we did get to stop by Manzanar for a short history lesson.

It was great to run into Marc again and talk Franklin's with Joe, as well as everyone else! Every time we go to a fly-in, I'm reminded that there are a LOT of great people in aviation =D>

Runway 17 has lots of tire tracks next to the runway. They all start after small culvert that passes under 17.

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

While we deeply regretted not positioning the plane up there before the weekend due to WX and scheduling, we were so glad to bring the trailer up there and get to spend the weekend with all of you. Sorry I missed you Anthony...sounds like by mere minutes!

Rebecca and Carly both loved it. Maybe some day we'll get Rebecca to get her ticket. Carly is planning on soloing on her 16th... so that gives me exactly 123 months and seven days to get ready.
