Great idea, thanks for posting this. I will try to be there in either the 172 or the Firestar. Which strips are people going to fly out to? How many of them are do-able in an old 145HP Cessna if for some reason the Firestar is not done yet?

Mrs. P, Carly and I will likely be in attendance in the training-wheel Maule! Don't count out MIT for fuel--cheaper than L45 and home to a bunch of us!

Sounds fun, we'll plan on being there unless I'm gone for work.

Make sure that you get The Professor (Pete) to bring the Cracker Jack in to this event. By that time he should have all his test flights done on the engine.

Oh no, whatever involves the professor should be kept at the south end of the field, and preferably somewhat hidden from public view.

I am unfamiliar with the current project...please enlighten me!

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

Well, we got a list of strips in mind, but for now, they are kinda on the downlow until 1) we completely finish building the newest one, 2) a few more permissions are obtained for all you guys to come in to some of the other ones, and 3) we get a full list with specs put together so everyone has the information they need to make good flying-capability decisions before they go in... More to come soon!

Keep checking the http://www.kernvalleyairport.com/newsevents.html site for more news and the latest schedule. :)

We must be talking about a different guy. Pete Plumb is definitely one of the most talented and capable people in aviation.

Pete is the #1 aircraft wood structures expert west of the Mississippi, if not the entire country. His aircraft wood work is nothing short of a work of art. Pete has taken it upon himself to design and manufacture a "certified aircraft quality" engine to meet the demand for a safe, reliable 4 stroke aircraft engine in the 60HP range. He has created a balance between a proven safe "gold standard" design, the best advances in modern CAD/CAM manufacturing, better materials, and better quality control than the "gold standard" engine upon which this is built.

He will bring this engine to market at a very attractive price, and he will offer the engine as both a factory build AND a "scrounger's special" where a homebuilder can save thousands by using many parts from a plentiful used engine.

Now, he is about to start testing the engine, and he will test it on an aircraft that he conceptualized, designed and engineered himself from scratch.

Either you're talking about a different guy, or (in order to look down your nose at Pete even a tiny amount) your name is Ed Heinemann, Kelly Johnson, Gerhard Waibel, or Geoffrey DeHavilland.

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

Sorry, my sarcasm font was turned off.... Pete is a legend and I have the utmost respect for him and what he does for the industry. He owned the volksplane my dad's class built in high school and loaned his 150 to a good friend of mine to start flight training.

What wasn't sarcasm is not being aware of his current project!

We're all good! Seriously though... I run into Pete from time to time but never actually knew the depth of the projects he's working on! I will be sure to stop in next time I see the open hangar door!

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

I was there with a buddy for the work party last Saturday. It's a beautiful place with a real nice camping area with lots of amenities (no, these are not mosquitoes although one did bite me). The Kern river (not too close but not too far) is high so be careful... Take a trip into town for some local color; you might meet a genuine desert rat of the human kind.

The turnoff to camping is near the approach of 17. Depending on your plane, you might be able to land on the numbers and turn right into camping. Otherwise, first taxiway off to left and left again to go back toward camping.

I will not be there this year but maybe next.... Enjoy

Blue skies,

Tom

Looks like the weather is going to move out of the area by this weekend so I'm planning on heading down with my son. Should be fun ... it's been a very long winter!!!

Re: KERN VALLEY AIRPORT BACKCOUNTRY FLY-IN, May 5th-7th 2017

I will be driving in Friday afternoon to attend. Would love the opportunity to tag along in the right seat with someone on Saturday or Sunday and visit a few backcountry strips. If anyone is open to my tagging along please post here or PM me. More than willing to pay my share of the gas and or give the person one of my Gopro Camera mounts.

I will have a few of my mounts at the flyin for sale as well. I may also have a mount or two people can borrow for the day but that would require a user provided camera as my loaner gopros are already spoken for. There will also be a few in the raffle as well.

Best regards,

Marc Webster
