Re: La Garita Creek Colorado (5CO6), Sept 15-17 2017

Yeah, we've all become spoiled with the doodads we can strap into our airplanes. How'd we ever function without an iPad, or GPS, or Foreflight (or some other EFB)? But we did. I guess I flew 30 some years before I bought an aviation-grade handheld GPS and another 8 or 9 years before having one installed in the panel. Converting to FF from paper was semi-traumatic, but since doing it, I can't imagine going back. So all we need is for the gummit to shut down those things we rely on, and we're lost, lost, lost! Well, not really, but it does seem a lot like it.

Sorry that I missed LaGarita but it was a busy weekend. Black Hills, LaGarita and Negrito. Ended at Negrito and it was a great weekend, but I have to admit that La Garita is one of my very favorites. Hope to try to make it up there before Mike closes it in October.

My buddy and his wife flew a 182 from San Diego and got to the fly in on Saturday. He really enjoyed the whole experience, the trip, the folks and the food. Stopped in Glenwood Springs and Montrose on the way back. I am jealous of you guys.

I enjoyed visiting with both of them. I think I caused a little trouble, when she learned that I have a cot and tent heater. Very nice folks. They flew out right after I did--could see their track on my iPad.

Hey there everyone,
Laura and I had a great time and appreciate the hospitality you showed to us! The area was beautiful and started our week long trip around your state off right. One thing I always notice when traveling is how nice and friendly everyone is toward us.

Ranch caretaker Mike gets a big hat's off from us for keeping the ranch in great shape and for all he is doing to keep the strip available for future generations. Walter and Don kept us in tasty food and friendly conversation.

The stop at the ranch is going to be memorable for years to come.

We left shortly after Cary and stopped by Salida for fuel before moving on to Glenwood Springs. The passes might be useful but we saw 50+ winds (and, headwinds most of the time) during our week flying around the rocks. Good thing we upgraded to the 182. A couple years ago with our 172, we would have been almost flying backwards.

Thanks to all who shared info and suggestions! We've made new friends and look forward to bumping into you again. If any are in San Diego, don't hesitate to look us up. rboerner @ geckofinancial .com

Best wishes to all!

No, we didn't see anyone at the airport in Glenwood. We landed about 4:00ish and the airport was very quiet. A friend's daughter lives in Glenwood and she knew we were headed that way. So, she gave us a ride into town and some local 411. The next day, we rented bikes and went for a beautiful ride along the river (after being shuttled uphill from town).

And yes, my wife did learn from Cary that I had been concealing a number of camping luxuries. I am quite the minimalist and Cary didn't help my cause. [-X That's ok though. She is still quite open to tent camping and if it involves toting around a few more pounds, that's ok with me. Speaking of which, seeing how Cary shoehorns all that gear into his 172 is quite a site.
