***Important: if you are planning on attending, please take a minute to fill out both the online registration and wavier.***

This has been the premier backcountry fly-in here in Colorado for the last 2 years, and the ranch owner and manager have been gracious enough to offer a spring and fall fly-in. Please plan on attending to not only show your support for helping to keep La Garita Creek Ranch open and available to pilots year round, but to also enjoy the best of what Colorado has to offer.

We hope to see you there! More details to follow.

La Garita was a really fun fly-in in May. The location is attractive, the strip is relatively easy to land and take off from, the food was great, and the camaraderie was outstanding. My concerns at the moment are whether my airplane will be flyable by then and when (or if) the CPA Marble fly-in will be held.

I'm not familiar with the off-pavement capabilities of the Bo, but the smoothest part of the runway is 2600' long (Western portion past the entrance road). If you're comfortable/aircraft capable of operating at that length with a D.A. of probably 8.5-10k and possible tailwind then you'll be ok. If not, Mike (the ranch manager) is happily running shuttles to nearby Del Norte and Leach airfields to bring you back to the ranch.

Mike has another memorable event planned this fall with the Chuckwagon dinner, so we look forward to seeing you there.

I love the strip! I landed it in my Maule a year ago. Mike is a heck of a nice guy - I work with his son. Small world...

Might try to go in this year...

Since the strip runs uphill to the west, I doubt you'd have any problems with the Bo, especially since you already know the strip. The worst part of the strip isn't the strip itself but the squirrely winds that can prevail over it. That 2600' part is pretty smooth--the 800' on the east end that isn't smooth is best left to the large doughnut crowd :).

Re: La Garita Creek Ranch, CO Fall 2014 Fly-in - Sept 19-21

Looks like it's shaping up to be decent weather for this weekends upcoming fly-in in the San Luis Valley. Should be some great scenery with all the trees starting to turn colors up in the mountains.

A quick update. Everything is still a GO. Mike (the ranch manager) is bringing in a dedicated cook for this event who will be serving breakfast on Saturday morning along with the traditional Chuckwagon dinner on Saturday night. Lunch will also be available on request for those who prefer to hang out at the ranch. Hooper Pool is providing a special pilot rate for the hot springs, so make sure to identify yourself as being with the fly-in. For those who fly-in on Friday, the LG Trading post restaurant is hosting lunch/dinner prior to 7p.

If you haven't signed up yet and are thinking about stopping by, please be sure to register so we can get an accurate meal count in to the cook. Chicken Fried Steak or roasted chicken along with all the fixins/desert. byob

If that wasn't enough. On Sunday Sept 21st, Creede (Mineral County Airport / C24) will host their Fly-In Breakfast beginning at 9 AM to round the weekend off. They have invited participants in the Creede Car Show who stay overnight after the Saturday show to display their cars and have breakfast.

Cabins are still available for those who don't want to tent camp. See yah there! :D

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Damn I wish I could make it, but I'm saving up my brownie points to get a hall pass for High Sierra in October. The fact that the marg wagon is going to be there is all the more reason I hate to miss it!

Re: La Garita Creek Ranch, CO Fall 2014 Fly-in - (PICTURES)

Wow, what a beautiful weekend in Southern Colorado. The trees are nearing prime, the air was cool and the winds were light.

I couldn't stay for the entire fly-in and Creede breakfast due to work, but I was able to go down last night and leave around noon today. LOTS of great planes and people there, what a fantastic event! Hope everyone has a fun time tonight and a safe flight home tomorrow.

Crossing the Sangres at the prime time with prefect light and no wind.

What a machine this SQ-2 is. The owner is quite the guy too!

No moon and no clouds, the stars were incredible.

Castle Lakes (PVT) was simply fantastic in the cool mountain air.

About a weekend away from prime colors, but still plenty of beauty.

There's always time for a Lopez story in the thin air (9,600 ft MSL).

Final stop for me was Hooper for lunch.

After Hooper I had to make a fast flight back to Denver for work, logged in just a few minutes late. I sure made the most of this hall pass!

Glad I was able to be a part of the fun. Lots of smiling faces and happy pilots when I left. I believe there were close to 50 people (lots of kids, always great to see) and 30 planes. A HUGE THANK YOU to Mike S. for hosting this fine fly-in and welcoming us back!
