La Garita Creek Ranch, CO fly-in - June 21-23 (w/Pictures)

Colorado has a NEW backcountry airstrip!

Come join us for the grand re-opening of the La Garita Creek Ranch Airstrip in South Central Colorado. Over the last few months, a group of pilots have been working hand-in-hand with the ranch manager at the La Garita Creek Ranch (a former guest ranch) to open the property up for recreational use. In this time we've improved the runway, added windsocks, and repaired many of the cabins. The location is impressive, about 10 miles North of Del Norte, CO. The La Garita Creek runs through the property providing for lot's of shade trees and fishing. Overnight guests can camp in a tent or stay in one of the many cabins (reasonable rates). The ranch manager is very excited to host a fly-in and see what people think of the airstrip and ranch.

Here are a few of the basics. 3400ft runway (2600ft improved, 800ft natural rough grass), 8050 ft MSL (high DA!), lots of parking, room for tents, firepit, a lodge, and a half dozen cabins. Preferred landing is to the West and takeoff to the East. This is a strip where good pilot skills and mountain experience is required.

UPDATES (6/2/13)
-There will be a Beef Brisket dinner with all the fixin's on Saturday night. We told them to plan for 100, so we need more people to sign up. :)
-The Hooper Sand Dunes Pool welcomed us back with open arms. Plan to fly-out Saturday and enjoy lunch and a soak.
-Other Saturday morning fly-outs will include Quarter Circle Circle Ranch (HIGH Density Altitude @ 9600ft MSL), Saguache (04V), Creede, and others.

(Note: This is a private airstrip, a signed waiver and prior permission is required.)

Very cool! First I've heard of it. Is this the Phipps ranch between Del Norte and Creede? Closer drive than I just did to Caveman.

It's great to see an airstrip actually being OPENED and not closed.

Very Cool! That will be the first weekend that I am in CO so I'm sure I will have way too much going to to make it. Hopefully it goes really well and they will hold another one.

Re: La Garita Creek Ranch, CO fly-in - June 21-23

We will have a online waiver system set up shortly. I'll post it here.

For those wanting to stay in cabins, we will have that webpage set up soon as well.

If anyone likes to rock climb, Penitente Canyon is only a 2 mile hike to world class climbing.

This is going to be a hoot, I hope many of you can make it!

=D>

The climbing at Penitente is pretty good (going to be very warm the end of June) but there is not a lot of moderate or easy climbing below 5.10. If I can talk the wife and kid into going down, I would be willing to bring extra ropes, harnesses, set up topropes and show people how to belay. Of course I'm not a commercial guide - so this would be purely on a "friend" basis. Climbing shoes would be the only thing you would need to secure before arriving - and you can rent them at an REI or climbing outfitter in a town of any substance. There is no place to get gear anywhere near - bring what you need including plenty of water.

Information on climbing in Penitente and the San Luis Valley is best found on Mountain Project:

Updated Info on the La Garita Creek Fly-in

We had to make a few last minute updates to the new webpage for the fly-in information, so without further delay here are the links to all the details:

Fly-In Registration Form: CLICK HERE

It's rare that we get to open a new backcountry airstrip, so we look forward to having people fly-in to enjoy and show support for the opening. Please pass this on if you know someone who is interested. Soy- Thanks for the info on Penitente Canyon - that would be fun. The ranch has 460 private acres and backs up to USFS and BLM land. While in the area feel free to check-out some of the other backcountry airstrips that the San Luis Valley has to offer. We'll have more info on the new website too.

Re: La Garita Creek Ranch, CO fly-in - June 21-23

I'm in - reserved a cabin (I think) for me and my boy. Any fish in that crick? Or maybe I should ask if there is any water first?

Lemme know if anyone wants to go climbing - otherwise I'm leaving all the gear at home and we'll just fly. Not sure I have room for it anyway.

I'm going to try to at least drive down. After today, sounds like I'll be making a job switch very, very soon....or actually, leaving my job...need to find something else quickly.

Re: La Garita Creek Ranch, CO fly-in - June 21-23

Should we expect an email confirmation or something from the web site indicating acceptance of our cabin reservation, waiver, and registration? Because I don't think I've received anything yet.

Soy - PM Sent regarding the cabin request.

Another quick update: Saturday night dinner (for those who reserve a plate on the registration form) is going to be good - Beef Brisket plate with all the fixins and desert.

There are still cabins available. The main lodge will also be open during the event and has a large dining room along with facilities.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Hey Gary,
The La Garita Trading post is 4 miles down the road. Their restaurant hours vary but are generally from 7A-3P for breakfast & lunch. I've ate there for both and the food is great. There will be plenty of people with cars at the ranch so it probably won't be too hard to get a lift. We're also working on the availability of a "to go" option for people staying at the ranch in the future.

Gary, I'm not sure if that paved road has obstacles or not. Perhaps Tom could answer this. Either way, for the fly-in, it might be best to have everyone shuttle over in a car/truck so we don't have 25 planes parked in downtown La Garita.

Also, Hooper was very receptive to having folks come over for lunch and a soak on Saturday.

I talked with the cafe owner yesterday and he is considering getting a strip closer so that would be great. Guess I'll just let that dog lay for now. I'll heck it out when I am over there. Cafe owner is talking about shuttling folks back and forth.
