Landing at all CA Public Airports

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

I was inspired by this Thread to post all the places I've logged. I'm only a student pilot (hopefully not by not weekend) so my list is small but it'll grow and start to get some good backcountry fields on there. Thanks for the idea.

Not bad

Hey that's pretty good for a student. Only 63 left to go in AZ.

Hey Craig, you're doing great! How long you been at it? I'm happy to see that there are others out there. I need to mark an e-chart to share as well. That's a little frustrating to mark off a field and then it's closed. Same thing happened when I was "collecting" major league ballparks. I think probably 10 have been torn down since I did that. I did overfly a closed airport at Shingletown the other day. Guess they lost funding for maintaining runway; looked OK to me. I'm going to post later today my trip up to Oregon and 8 new airports for 126 total now.

Well, in 15 years of random flying around CA, I managed to land at about 90 airports. Since I started at it in ernest about a year ago, I've added another 70 or so. Could take me another year or two to finish at this rate.

Shingletown was closed at least 5 years ago, and is off the sectional, so not on my list. Looking forward to reading your pireps from your trip. NorCal has a ton of fantastic strips. Wish I lived closer!

Logging airports,

What a fun thing to do. When I was a kid I got hired as a copilot on a corporate jet, the old DH-125, which evolved into the HS-125, BA-125, Beech Hawker-125 and eventually the series of current Hawker Jets.

Anyhow...the chief pilot was a wild and very decedant sort of guy. On the wall in his den he had an aeronautical chart of the U.S. Many airports were covered by black and red stick pins. I asked him what the pins represented. "The black pins are where I have landed" he answered. "The red pins are where I landed and got lucky with a lady." I was amazed by the many RED pins!

If I were computer literate I'd love to post a map of the USA, like I have in my hanger. It is 16' by 10' and shows the routing my son and I took on our 15,000 mile flight around the entire border of the U.S.A. in 2003. There are 63 silver stars where we landed and 23 blue stars where we landed and also camped.

No RED stars though!!

Enjoy! Flying is the most fun one can have with their pants on!!

Bob :)

Bob, you've inspired me to write a tutorial for people who'd like to create their own "Airports I've Landed At" maps with Google Maps.

Here's mine.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Okay, now I can't resist. Here's my map. Maybe we should start a new "flying map" thread.

Scott's Amazing Travels

Click on a pin, a balloon pops up. Click on the text in the balloon and it takes you to a blog entry about that airport. I like the simpler version in the tutorial above though.

1SeventyZ,

Thanks. No time to look at it this morning but I will attempt to create a map in a couple of weeks. I am leaving this morning on an 8 day mission to Applachia. A dozen of us are traveling there to install new siding and storm windows at the home of a needy family.

Will check in when we get back.

Zane,
You got me inspired to start a map. So far I have 10 airports but I keep getting interrupted. Thanks for the tutorial I had the project going as far as flying to the airports but I never got around to push pins documenting. My old fashion brain had a sectional and real pins in mind. This approach is much better and fun once you get the hang of the search for airports. Not as much fun as the actual conquest of a new airport but does bring back memories of great landings and not so great landings
Onthegas thanks for giving this new life for me! This summer in California the challenge has been finding a day of visibility beyond 3SM:roll:

Hi All, I'm really happy with the response here. It actually is a fun challenge not only visiting all those airfields and towns but getting a chance to learn about unfamiliar geography and micro-cultures. This week I flew up to Oregon to see my pal Chuck at Beagle Sky Ranch north of Medford. That gave my a chance to add 8 more CA airports and 2 new Oregon airports, Ashland and Grants Pass! We woulda flown to Paradise Bar Lodge and Gold Beach but old Chuck was quickly turning into Up-Chuck and we had to cut it short. Here's the synopsis of my trip which featured smooth, clear air:

Minden to Oregon:
1O6 Dunsmuir. Cool upsloping runway, no restrooms (not indoors anyway!)
O46 Weed.
1O5 Montague. Landed on dirt cross runway. Close to town for eats.
SIY Siskyou County. BIG.
Ashland, Beagle Sky Ranch (OR96), Grants Pass Oregon airports
Oregon to Minden:
A30 Fort Jones Scott Valley. Really pretty area, air attack helo base.
O86 Trinity Center. Residential airpark on Shasta Lake. NICE homes.
O54 Weaverville. 3.5 degree upsloping runway 36. No landings on 18!
O85 Redding Benton. Little airport, cafe re-opens later this month
RBL Red Bluff. Been here before but had to eat. Great, cheap cafe!
Long, but low flight to Minden.

Coming into Dunsmuir

Sorry I didn't get a pic or two of Red Bluff's terminal. Must date to WW2, with a little museum, lots of vintage historic pictures and an upstairs cafe with great views and cheap but good food. Next time, Roger. (Thx Z!)

Here's my "been there" list. Thanks Zane, for the G-map instructions (some brain you got there, bud!). 09-24-08= 147 airports visited, 103 to go:

Hey Onthegas, how did you get to land on San Clemente Island? Were you in the military?

No military service, but in my earlier days I flew military contract charter flights over there from the San Diego area. Some of our pilots would have all day there and would take snorkeling gear; best abalone fishery on the left coast!
By the way, you may note that I push pinned NAS Lemoore and NAS El Centro as well (OK, not actual CA public airports, but I'm not counting them or private strips in the total either).

Zane, this one's for you...

CA airports

I did my Google map a little differently. I wanted to show all airports in CA including the ones I'd been to (currently 178 in blue) as well as the ones I hadn't (72 in red).

Hi all, today I flew for 2.1 hours and only added one airport to my total! I uploaded a few pics at the "where did you fly today" thread. Sure had fun!

Hi there, today I flew to 6 new airports for a total now of 134, including 48 in the Husky. I would've flown to Oakdale, but svanarts, who owes me a Coke, begged off! I guess I'll try to give him more than 15 minutes notice next time. It was nice flying everywhere today, especially the central valley at 500agl and 70mph with the door open.

RIU Rancho Murieta
E27 Elk Grove Sunset Sky Ranch
F72 Franklin (just look for a BIG prison)
153 Lodi Airpark (more ag-strip than air-park)
1O3 Lodi Muni (good food on field, admin bldg with lotsa mounts)
CPU Calaveras County (good fuel price, homey FBO, seaplane school!)

Rancho Murieta, where norcal FSS is located
Image
Elk Grove, shoulda landed on the dirt...next time around!
Image
Lodi Muni: skydivers, aircraft junk pile, food.
Image
Camache Reservoir; just a little low...
Image
Calaveras, multi-engine seaplane rating here in Apache amphib
