Lightweight bushwheels for LSA types

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

Lightweight bushwheels for LSA types

I have several hours now on my new 29" ULTRALIGHT Airstreaks, I stress the ultralight part as I thought for the last 1500 hours while I was flying around with the "regular" Airstreaks I was doing good. Turns out I was packing around an extra 12 pounds by not availing myself of these somewhat new (I'm not sure how long they've been making them) 1320 lb gross weight tires. They seem to be constructed a bit different, the side walls have ripples in them, and the tire has a bead down the center, a result I guess of a different layup technique I suppose. Not a complaint just a comment. i pretty much covered all this in an earlier post, but wanted to put it in the LSA department and also chime in on how much i like them after getting more time on them.

The first time I pushed the plane out of the hangar, I was amazed by the difference in rolling resistance! As in, WAY less. I am also noticing a difference in initial acceleration, it gets out of the hole quicker. A win/win as far as I'm concerned. When I think of all the climbouts I've made, packing an extra 12 lbs., #-o Now to see how long I can go without hitting pavement, more then 10 hours so far. I also have to decide if I am going to start, again, the Herculiner bed liner regime. It sure paid off on the (since sold) original Airstreaks. If I can make it until winter, when I switch to the skis, without a pavement landing I'll wait until then.

I just did Herculiner on the 29's om my 180. I didn't feel like jacking it up so did two coats on most of the tire and let it cure till the next day and rolled in ahead and finished. I made two flights and looks like it is going to work. I used a quart can on both tires.

Can these be put on a Cessna 162?

Thanks!

Not likely. 162 is a trike and a factory built LSA, granting you the premission, I doubt Cessna would do so.

Re: Lightweight bushwheels for LSA types

I've been told that Airframes AK has discontinued the ultralights, shortly after I bought mine it seems! I'm not sure how to take this....other then to not sweat it, and if mine happen to fail in some way in some ridiculously short amount of time, I would hope to get some sort of pro rated discounts on new "regular" Airstreaks. Meanwhile, I'm saving 12 pounds each and every time I climb out. =D>

They handled this site just fine. Those rocks aren't laying there loose, but embedded, and are jagged. I hope AA doesn't see this pic, when I bitch about them not holding up. #-o Image Image
