Keeping me and the aircraft safe is the bottom line:

The best defense is not being there. Forecasts and weather media are pretty easy to follow. But, unfortunately caught in heavy weather, every situation has the potential of extreme variables. Researching those variables beforehand is what I do. Good info found in this thread.

Ie. crossing Tornado Alley in the Summer requires extreme vigilance and a quick moving flight plan. I have done it in a slow moving amphib (returning from Wipaire). Lots of convection, not a place to stay tied down outside for long! Witnessed a tornado, great learning experience. Luckily it missed the airport.
