Lousy commercial tow bar

I had a store bought tow bar that really wasn't up to the task of moving my Maule when the ground in front of the hangar was rough. That poor thing bent all over the place and failed several times. A big part of the problem was the solid wheels at the end of a long, flat plate cantilevered off of a 1" square tube. The pressure at the end of the plate bent the frame and failed the welds. Rather than continue repairing a bad design, I sketched out something new and built it. This new tow bar is specifically designed for tailwheel aircraft and will last as long as the plane! Here's some shots of the old, bent tow bar and the evolution of parts into something new.

Re: Lousy commercial tow bar

I've got a simple towbar that I bought about 22 years ago.
Spruce sells them for about $75 these days.
Hooks onto the t/w axle nuts.
It's worked just fine with my last 3 airplanes.
The only upgrade I'd want would be something with power.

Re: Lousy commercial tow bar

If you look close at one of the wheels in the pile of parts you'll notice it has a drive gear on it. I have a 300 W 24 V motor that will be mounted to the towbar next with a battery pack. The motor is for a mobility scooter and came with a controller and a throttle. I also have a polarity reversing switch so I'll have forward and reverse on what will become a tug. My project is continuing, but since my old towbar was trash, I'm using the new one manually until the motor can be added. Stay tuned...
