Lurkers Bust Out - V3

Not to get too flaky, but in light of buying another taildragger and starting in on yet another fool's errand of a project, I found myself reflecting this AM on just how lucky we all are to have this community. I don't think a day goes by where I don't either eMail someone I have met here on BCP, or spend a solid 20 min on the phone laughing with one of the dozen good friends I have met because of this forum.

It's allowed me to grow as a pilot, mechanic, and now CFI as well as push my obsession to places I would not have dreamed only a couple of years ago. I dont think I would be a tenth as good at any of those had it not been for the folks here. It really is an incredible resource.

At any rate, I'm writing this to again reach out to all those who are sitting on the fringe and reading... soaking it in... but thinking they don't have anything to say.

I have found this community to be extremely welcoming, so please, if you have been lurking, take a second to step up and introduce yourself

...and of course as always, if you are like minded, remember that this site is run on donations. LOL Im sure Zzz would not mind if a couple of lads clicked the link below.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

Ok, so I will break out and say hello.
Been ‘lurking’ for sometime and really appreciate the vast information on this site. Really enjoying reading the piloting technique threads... maybe one day I will venture down to meet and fly with ContactFlying sometime.
Jealous of some of the great locations many of you have to venture out to... and hope to sometime be in position to explore some of the other great areas of this country.

Based in the “flatlands” of the midwest in Northern Illinois.
Own and fly a PA22/20-150.

Though, do get some fun in the snow occasionally... :-)

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

New guy,

I’m at the VT/NH border. Comm/inst. rated, been out of flying for a while, ready to get back in. Currently shopping for a 170, 175 TW, 180 etc. hopefully will find something this fall. Mission is mostly flying for the fun of it, with some longer cross country plans. Seems like a 170 0-360 would be great, fun and practical enough.

Have learned some from reading on here.

Anyone have any good leads?

Loving lurking here. Maybe some day I'll have something to contribute. In the meantime, here's my first solo takeoff in the 185.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

Been lurking for a couple of years. I am a "preacher/pilot" in NC. I pastor a small church and am a CFI/CFII in fixed wing and CFIS in gyroplanes. I have flown demonstration rides for the different gyroplane manufacturers each of the last two years at Oshkosh and Sun N' Fun and always hang around to watch the STOL competitions. I also have my tailwheel endorsement and run a ministry (my user name) that promotes the use of micro-aviation assets (kitplanes/light-sport/gyroplanes) in the mission field.

What part of the CT River are you paddling over?

A few of us visit Stuart and Johns Rest. on the southern half, and the WAD event in Wentworth, along with Post Mills and the valley up towards Crawford Notch. And Parlin is popular for fuel prices.

I'm another lurker from the NH/VT border. I keep a Maule in Claremont though I'm currently in Ketchikan for the summer flying Beavers. Here are a couple pictures from this summer.

I’m planning on being based at post mills. Which means that I’d need to be on skis to fly in the winter, since it’s not plowed.

Good to hear from you too; I hope your summer is going well. Beavers have been losing a lot of cylinders down here this summer but that was a little more than just a cylinder.

Another Maule owner in CT here. Plane is down for a recover currently but looking to add floats, fittings and skis for the winter season. Would love to meet up when she’s back.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

Hi all,

Decided that today would be a good day to finally stop lurking and instead register and post something for the first time. After the intro by Bigrenna (well said) I think there is no better thread to start from.

So... I'm Martin, from Innsbruck/Austria and a VERY low time pilot. Started my PPL training last fall and finished in the summer. Did it with the local flying club which is quite large (Aquila A211, DA-40, Dynamic WT9, and now also a DA-42 TwinStar, total of some 15 planes) but has not a single taildragger... Most of the planes have glass cockpits, even the Aquilas which they use for training. They have many CFIs and many planes (flexibility) and it was the most affordable training around. Also, it doesn't hurt that the airport is close by and training on an international airport has some advantages (and many disadvantages).
BUT... the reason I (finally, after putting it off for many years) started into this was always taildragger and bush flying. Flights (as a passenger) in Alaska and Iceland have added to the desire just about as much as lurking around BCP a lot.

So naturally, I was looking for some opportunities but even though there are a couple of SuperCubs (and even a Maule) based out of LOWI, nobody is providing training in them. But then, through an old school friend I found the right plane, including an instructor who would introduce me to this plane and taildragger flying! And so, yesterday was my first flight as PIC on a taildragger, a beautiful 1951 SuperCub. It was converted from a military L18C and is powered by the 90hp C90-8F without starter and alternator.

Returning from a photo flight in the dolomites. Looking to the West, beautiful weather yesterday, though in the far distance the front is already visible that moved in during the night. Due to that also some turbulence at ridge level. Also notice the gliders on the grass, as I have been told, LOWI is one of the very few airports with international airline traffic and glider traffic right next to each other.

After our 1-hour flight. View to the Southeast.

The plan now is to get some more taildragger training and going to smaller (grass) strips and fly around the mountains as much as time permits (not too much unfortunately). Also hope to get somewhere up north again as soon as possible, even if not as PIC.

Thank you all for all the info I could already soak up through BCP. And also often a welcome change on many office days :D
