Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

Hi all,

I'm defiantly a lurker but I do check in from work almost every week day to see whats new and learn a little bit. I bought a C-140 6 months ago and have loved learning fly backcountry.

Sierra7 wrote:Hi all,

Decided that today would be a good day to finally stop lurking and instead register and post something for the first time. After the intro by Bigrenna (well said) I think there is no better thread to start from.

So... I'm Martin, from Innsbruck/Austria and a VERY low time pilot. Started my PPL training last fall and finished in the summer. Did it with the local flying club which is quite large (Aquila A211, DA-40, Dynamic WT9, and now also a DA-42 TwinStar, total of some 15 planes) but has not a single taildragger... Most of the planes have glass cockpits, even the Aquilas which they use for training. They have many CFIs and many planes (flexibility) and it was the most affordable training around. Also, it doesn't hurt that the airport is close by and training on an international airport has some advantages (and many disadvantages).
BUT... the reason I (finally, after putting it off for many years) started into this was always taildragger and bush flying. Flights (as a passenger) in Alaska and Iceland have added to the desire just about as much as lurking around BCP a lot.

So naturally, I was looking for some opportunities but even though there are a couple of SuperCubs (and even a Maule) based out of LOWI, nobody is providing training in them. But then, through an old school friend I found the right plane, including an instructor who would introduce me to this plane and taildragger flying! And so, yesterday was my first flight as PIC on a taildragger, a beautiful 1951 SuperCub. It was converted from a military L18C and is powered by the 90hp C90-8F without starter and alternator.

Returning from a photo flight in the dolomites. Looking to the West, beautiful weather yesterday, though in the far distance the front is already visible that moved in during the night. Due to that also some turbulence at ridge level. Also notice the gliders on the grass, as I have been told, LOWI is one of the very few airports with international airline traffic and glider traffic right next to each other.

After our 1-hour flight. View to the Southeast.

The plan now is to get some more taildragger training and going to smaller (grass) strips and fly around the mountains as much as time permits (not too much unfortunately). Also hope to get somewhere up north again as soon as possible, even if not as PIC.

Thank you all for all the info I could already soak up through BCP. And also often a welcome change on many office days :D

Unfortunately didn't take any in-flight photos yesterday.
And forgot to mention that my long-time goal would be flying in Iceland and Alaska. Also I'd like to do a backcountry flying trip to the lower 48 someday in the future.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

I've been lurking for awhile, always wanted to learn to fly but did other things instead. Worked as a newspaper photographer for 25 eyars and always tried to get the assignments that that let me fly. I've gotten to fly in some cool planes over the years. I recently picked up a photo job doing aerials and figured it was a good time to learn to fly. I've got about 15 hours so far, once I get some more time in, there's a 150 tailwheel I can train in as well.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V2

This thread finally got me to take the time to register and post up. I have been looking for a little taildragger to put out on the grass strip behind my barn and my research brought me here. I enjoy the wide variety of topic and points of view shared here. I live in the flat lands, but love to see and read the stories of flying out west and in Alaska. I have effectively zero time flying taildraggers, but some hours flying helicopters doing off airport activities overseas. I hope to find that cherry Cessna 170 soon.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V3

In light of Zzz’s camaraderie post the other day, and on the backs of what is feeling like some new energy on BCP, it might be an appropriate time to bump this thread.

Who’s new? Who’s lurking but not contributing? Building a project but not sharing??

I know Wolf is finally back to his home and rehabilitating (he’s lurking,) Roman M’s just ready to fly a 6 year 170B restoration we did (lurks,) and Joe from the UK is crushing it in his Cessna (lurks.)

(Sorry fellas! LOL)

Anyway, spring is here and birds are getting pulled out of hibernation. Time to speak up-

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V3

I read a lot, and posted my first flight video last month. I did not post my build progress on BCP as I was posting daily on the Bearhawk forum where the help and responses where more helpful to my build being it was brand specific. When I started building in late 2021 the photo uploading on this site just made it too time consuming to also post here as I originally intended.

Greg I am looking forward to your build.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V3

I lurk pretty much every day, it's the first thing I do to get the day started. Did a ton of research on here recently regarding the 3 blade MT on an O360. Happy to report that at least in my situation it was a great improvement over the boat anchor I had on, even when I use full power on a go around.

Re: Lurkers Bust Out - V3

And here I thought if I just sent ZZZ a few dollars now and again I could avoid public scrutiny....
Point taken, I've got thousands of photos and an almost finished product to display of my 170B build Odyssey. If the BCP community can handle viewing yet another pictorial of a 170 build I might be inclined.

Think I qualify for this!

Thanks to everyone for the input, the build threads and the community.

I’ve been a lurker for years & yesterday decided to join to comment on the 185 thread, but decided not to.
I’ve owned my own 185 since October 1983;it’s spent its early years on cap3000D floats & then has been on wheels while waiting for our rebuilt to new Edo 2790’s.
My dad was Canadian military, first as aeroengine tech on beavers, otters & then DC3’s before going to flight engineer on Labradors & Voyageurs.
He was my mechanic for my first 12 years of ownership.
Lots & lots of fishing in the western chilcoutin.
Upgraded the plane to the full garmin suite & it has since sat in limbo awaiting hangar space to finish the job.
Even in the worst of times for me I always hung onto the plane & of the almost 42 years of ownership there are gaps of inactivity totaling almost 10 years.
Love flying - constantly amazed at what the 185 can do.
Thanks Zane for helping me get going.
