Hey Rob, make sure you charge Pat for gas, instruction, insurance, oil, a round trip plane ticket, hotel, beer, burgers, hangars fees, etc. :D

Don't let yourself get rushed-- take your time & do everything right.
I'm curious why you chose to do the engine R&R in Madras. You mainly live in the Portland area, & the engine shop is there too-- seems like it woulda been easier to tear things apart there. is your Madras hangar set up better for this kind of job?

Hey Hotrod, I like to use AP/IA Rob Berg of Berg Air at the Madras airport. He has been my primary AP for 3 years. I like him and his staff. We seem to be a good match. The engine shop I decided to use is at my home airport. I like to use local guys when ever possible.

We will take our time and do it right.

I know it is an honest mistake, but. I don't live in, or claim any affiliation with that creepy Portland place anymore. I live on 18 acres between Gresham, Troutdale, Sandy, Boring.

Cheers...Rob

I do a pretty good impression of a cfi. I fly for fun. If I was instructing that would be work. :D

We will see what the wx is like. I do not really want to fly in small circles for 25 hours.

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

Sorry Rob, don't shoot me :D :D I meant to say Troutdale. If I fly back to "Troutdale" with you, will you even take me to the big airport where the airliners fly in/out of so I can catch a flight home? Or will I have to call a cab. Or I know, you'll drop me off at the Flying J across the highway and I can thumb a ride back to Boise. I'm sure my fellow trucker friends would help me out.

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

Took a little spin around the local area today and dropped in on the guys at Berg to say "hi". Kind of thought I'd run into you (Rob) turning a wrench or hanging out. I did see your engine though! You must be getting excited! Anyway, I'll look forward to meeting you some time in the future. Maybe a saturday morning coffee at the fbo? I feel like I'm supposed to say "cheers" now, so cheers! :D

Rob,

I'm based out of Redmond. If the weather is in fact good I may cruise by for a quick visit to say "hi" so as to not hamper the progress! If there's a time that works best let me know otherwise I'll be spontaneous. Always looking for a reason to fly and I sort of have one of those FF schedules to accomidate! I hope it works out.

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

maule motor lookin' fine Rob. im always around...got a damn job! BUT, always got time to meet up someplace cool like driggs,id at the warbirds cafe...run that 540 right Rob, u really dont have to run it too hard. air-cooled motors like ours run plenty hot as it is, it will break in right even at normal settings. my book says 23 sq is best, even though it is not best, it does run consistently hot there, and burns tons of fuel...! glad to see u back in the air again, it is weird being down, isnt it?! seems to totally limit our freedom with the bird down, i know...

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

Didn't make it up today. Just a few more things to do. Probably in the air by noon tomorrow. clippwagon I'll be around except for the 1 hour shake down flight.
I'm suppose to keep it below 4000MSL till I get 5 hours on it so I may be limited where I can go. Lets see Driggs is 6200' thats close to 4000' if it is cold enough the DA will be 4000' yeh thats it.

Good day...Rob

I know you were jokin' about the "cold enough DA" but if you are breaking in a new engine its good to not have it really cold. It is possible to glaze the cylinders keeping the rings from seating and create an oil burner. I expect your mechanic will have sound advice on the run in. Bet it will feel good to have that Maule overcast in Oregon again.

Lycoming O-540 making metal.

Amazing what a differance 100 miles makes. Here in Madras, Oregon all brilliant sun, 29* calm. Back on the west side of the Cascades, clouds and DZ. Today and tomorrow look great for flying the new Lycoming 235HP Hiking to the top of the hill then off to the airport.

If you are ever near The Madras airport stop by. Great people! Open 24/7 Hi speed internet, new FBO, shower, pool table, courtesy car, 5 minutes to town. Madras has it all. Fast food, ACE Hardware, Safeway, BiMart.
