Voting in Australia is compulsory for state and national elections. You can vote "none of the above" , but you still gotta vote. If you don't, you are subject to fines or community service. They always have a good turnout.

Happy day. Parts came in and the shop wasted no time getting it back together.

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

Gorgeous. Now if we could cook up some high tec rocker box oil return line fittings it would stay that way. On the subject of cooking; the photo of the new cylinder puts me in mind of Coyote Ugly's geo cooking experiment. Just throw some stew meat, taters, carrots, celery and fixin's in one of those and drop 'er down in the thermal vent out there in that "Big Ol' Desert" for cookin'. Then soak till done.

What "break-in" crowd are you in?
Run it hard or baby it?

I'll do what the engine shop says. The first flight is 1 hour. Run it hard! MP 2" over rpm. No lean, no +4000msl.

Hours 2-5 GENTLY lean MP 2" more than RPM, lean 125 ROP, no touch and goes, no instrument approaches, no +4000msl, no short flights -30min.

Hours 5-10 Touch and goes ok, MP and RPM the same, GENTLY lean 100 ROP

At 10 hr change oil and filter, inspect for contaminates, you will find some, use break in oil.

Hours 10-25 Lean as necessary 100 ROP, MP and RPM the same.

At 25 hour change oil and filter, inspect for contaminates. Service with regular oil if oil consumption has stabilized.

Looks like I picked a nice day to drive over the mountains.

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

I just got my Blackstone Laboratories newsletter and it has an interesting article on engine fault diagnosis for Lycoming and Continental engines:

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

I replaced an engine in a Mooney Bravo, TSIO-540, very close break in specs from my shop, just longer flights up to 10 hours, they said for sure run it hard and your rings will be ever grateful, 10 hour oil change a must, i live in Bend if you need a second pilot

Re: Lycoming O-540 making metal.

I'll be home in Emmett the weekend after Thanksgiving if you want to do a hard 3 hour flight this way. Then 3 hard hours back to Portland. :D

Don't let yourself get rushed-- take your time & do everything right.
I'm curious why you chose to do the engine R&R in Madras. You mainly live in the Portland area, & the engine shop is there too-- seems like it woulda been easier to tear things apart there. is your Madras hangar set up better for this kind of job?
