Mack Mesa (C07)

Today I was planning to fly up to Mack Mesa from the Albuquerque, NM area. While I was getting the WX Brief, the briefer said that this airport is now private, so I take that to mean it is not open to the public and as a result I chose another destination. Who do you contact for permission to land?
Thanks,

Mack Mesa is open to the public and sells avgas. The airport Manager's name is Ladd and is very general aviation friendly. More info below:

+1

Ladd's a great guy and Mack is what GA airports are supposed to be. I'd go out of my way to stop there.

A comment I found on AirNav that was posted on Sept 13, 2013:

"Comments from AirNav users

From Bill Marvel on 19-Sep-2013
The airport is now private and no longer open to the public. The owner does not want any air traffic unless the aircraft are based there or have his permission. Also, Ladd Klinglesmith is no longer the owner but continues as the airport manager. "

I hope that's not true. Gotta fly over there in a couple weeks and I really don't want to have to go into Grand Junction.

Re: Mack Mesa (C07)

The airport is very friendly and the best place around if u are in the area

They are also having a flyin this weekend and a stol contest with a BBQ that I plan to attend

Ladds the kind of guy I wish all airport mangers where, a cowboy from Meeker, great pilot, former crop duster who now flys a cub, hosts the eaa chapter, loves backcountry flyin, and packs a gun

What more can u ask for :)

If u have any worries about stopping in I would just give Ladd a call 970-260-0707

But honestly if your in the area and need fuel, to pee, a maintaice issue, or just need to stretch your legs you won't find friendlier place, not just Ladd but all the guys that base out there are good down to earth people that would be quick to help a fellow aviator.

Now that being said if you are in that 1% of aviators that know everything and have an attitude Ladds not the kinda guy that would put up with it.

I wonder why this information has been passed around? Seems like there's a little truth to every rumor.

LOL! That's a good one.

I forgot to "Check In" at Dickies BBQ in Glendive, MT last night. It was pretty good!

Re: Mack Mesa (C07)

I was planning to fly up to Mack a coupe of weeks ago but had to cancel. Talked to Ladd and he couldn't have been nicer. N mention at all about permission, just fly up and enjoy.

I'd imagine the story is probably something similar to why they put "We reserve the right to refuse service" signs in lots of upstanding establishments. Would probably make for a decent story around a post fly-in campfire over some cold bevvies.

There is some truth to the rumor. Mack Mesa is now "officially" a private strip. For most aviators it makes no difference. It has to do more with local politics.
Come up and enjoy the fly-in activities this weekend and see why Mack is such a great place.

Wasn't it always "officially" a private strip?

Re: Mack Mesa (C07)

Pretty sure it was. When I was around it was Johnny Hartman's place. I think he got it from Betty Clark who was a crop duster back in the day. Talk about a character.

That place has always had a cool bunch of folks around.

Yeah, the Hartman brothers had a lineup of Tcrafts and Ercoupes, and there were a lot of neat old planes to learn about around all the time. Ernie and Russ ran the shop at the time I was there. Always a great place. Learned a lot hanging out there...
