ME5 Banks - Swan's Island, ME?

Anyone been in there? All I have is the comments on foreflight, and Google maps.

I explored that area at low altitude last October. I landed for fuel in Knox County, and there was a 135 operation with a small fleet of well worn 206's with cargo pods and mud flaps who flew into those strips regularly. I also landed at nearby Stonington Island. Had a good lobster roll at the local fishing village, did some hiking, and saw a show at the old play house in the village. Pretty boring show, but had a good nap for the flight home. That whole area is beautiful as you may already know.

Mainewoodsstol - just looking for any field conditions. Last I heard (and can see on the map) there was a drainage ditch that cut through the runway about halfway up from the help pad there.

If you're taking a 182 in there, I guess they must have been really cleaned it up.

Is that number in the AFD for Billy Banks? His field?

Sorry for getting back to you so late. For that I will give you the most comprehensive report I can. This runway report will follow the same format that Galen Hanselman uses in his fly Idaho book.

I gave the runway a Relative Hazard Index (RHI) of 27 below is the brake down.

Airport environment: 4 points 1000-2000ft, 1 pt of airport elevation, 1pt for surrounding terrain total A/E=6

Approch/Departure environment: 4pts >50 obstacle on approach, 3pts approach over water, 2pts RWY selection dictated by terrain, not wind total A/D=9

Runway Surface Hazards: 2pts for no runway markings, 1pts for loose gravel, 2pts for soft sand, 2pts for a large jump/bump then a sharp dip, 2pts for adverse gradient, 3pts for full ray length not usable, total RSH=12

There are some things that this evaluation does not seem to capture. The most important is that drainage that you mention. There was water running across the runway just uphill from helipad at one point. When I was there yesterday this area had been filled in with soft sand. When this was done it created a large jump that will easily send you airborne again if you are not well below flying speed.

If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out to me.
