MET tower bites the dust

Thanks to initial help from Whee in determining the owners, and then the Idaho Aeronatics guys, I got permission to de erect this tower, it is as of yesterday down. =D> It was a bitch of a 2 hour drive, made worse by the fact I had flown there earlier in 14 minutes. It took 5 minutes to make it go boom (no video, I was a little busy avoiding whipping cables while stumbling around in the sage brush. There is another one close by that is next on my list, also abandoned and out of compliance with newer marking standards. It's owners are dragging their feet on allowing me to down it, so far, I'll post on that one and try and get a helper that time (it's right in town, should be easy) to take video :D

Re: MET tower bites the dust

Thanks for removing that hazard. I know of some more where Idaho , Utah, and Nevada meet that need to go away. These particular ones are especially hazardous as they are very well camouflaged. Not sure which state they are in, but I think Idaho on a direct line between Idaho Falls and Elko.

Any suggestions on tracking these down to see if they can be removed?

Good work Tom! Wish I could have been more helpful.

Mike, Don't know that I'll be able to find ownership but if you send me the coordinates I'll try. Land owner probly won't take them down but they might allow someone to go up there and do it.

There was a time, and probably will be again someday, when I would have paid money for the right of takedown and salvage. Ham radio tower. I haven't been active since I'm thinking 2002? Still, when I'm too old to do other stuff I'll go back to it. It keeps me out of trouble.

Re: MET tower bites the dust

Seems like the windmill companies should be required to remove the MET towers as soon as they're no longer useful, like when they either prove that the area is windy enough for a wind farm or not windy enough so that they need to look elsewhere. This newer legislation that various states are passing seems only to address marking them, obviously not a sufficient response to the danger they pose, especially the dormant ones.
