MiraCheck Checklist for iOS and Android

Hi all; I was very happy with an ancient checklist app running on an old iPhone 4s but then it would no longer update so I switched to Apple Notes. This works Ok and has a check off mode and can be pulled across the right 1/3 of my new iPad Pro 10.5 screen. But now I have found a better solution that shows much promise.

Check out www.miracheck.com There is a FREE version with nominal capability that is similar to my old checklists. Editing it in the cloud is easy and fast. A lot of attention to detail has gone into this app.

For the subscription version (free 20 minute Preview), there are a ton of features and this would certainly appeal to someone who flies different types of aircraft. Many free and community contributed checklists and also CheckMate vendor versions are available. Other than its slick design, the app can act as your lowly copilot, reading your checklist to you. It responds to your voice commands (although I have not tested this yet). So you can have a hands free solution with a bluetooth headset. Might be reason enough to buy one...

I had some questions and got a rapid response from Jeff the creator via email. He is a Cessna pilot like many of us and I encouraged him to join. Jeff will be at Oshkosh, Booth 4035B. If you don't download the app, you could check it out there.

It is good to see such innovation in our community. Hope that it is a solution for many of us.

Blue skies,

Tom

I just downloaded it and it seems pretty simple but also seems to work so simple is good. I'm going to play around with it for a while to see if it's really worth it.

Play around with it and share your feedback. Full disclosure, I developed MiraCheck and we are just getting this off the ground and we are looking to the community to move the product forward. I myself am an instrument-rated pilot with a deep technology background and we are trying to create a tool that truly improves safety for pilots. The vision is a hands-free co-pilot that can help you reduce mistakes, give you information on demand when it is most needed, and eventually anticipate where you should be focusing based on your environment. Another design principle is even without the voice-recognition or voice narration, trying to keep the interface simple to easily move through your procedures in the most efficient way possible. As everything in aviation, redundancy and having multiple ways to achieve something is a guiding principle.

Yeah, this is starting to stink a little. The weird back and forth shill relationship makes me not want to try this software. Perhaps my instincts are wrong and unpaid users actually are this enthusiastic.

Re: MiraCheck Checklist for iOS and Android

I am pretty enthusiastic because I keep forgetting to do things when I am flying. On my last two flights I left a window open and it slammed up against the wing as I gained enough speed. Then, although I am not sure, I may have left the passenger door open for an hour long flight. The door either stayed closed (Cessna 182) or I opened it or it opened upon landing. Was a bit stressed because of lots of jet traffic going into Monterrey for Councours d'Elegance so not sure what happened. I once had a door pop open in flight on a Piper Warrior and it was certainly a memorable event! And I also forget little things like not closing cowl flaps from time to time. Perhaps I am not alone? So my interest is real.. And maybe I have too much time on my hands; LOL.

I don't have a Bluetooth headset so I only use Miracheck in text only in flight and played with voice on the ground. So these two videos (links sent to all purchasers, I assume) intrigued me as I could for the first time see how it worked via voice in actual flight.

I plan on buying a Lightspeed Zulu 3 when the budget allows so that I can take advantage of the Miracheck voice capability. Please don't accuse me of being a shill for Lightspeed; thanks.

All in all, I really enjoy and think this group is valuable. Thanks for everyone's contribution.

Tom

Re: MiraCheck Checklist for iOS and Android

I'm not against checklists, I use them everyday at work - but those are some complex machines. It sounds like you need to slow down a little and think about what you're doing. Go practice (often) in benign situations and steadily increase the complexity. Build a logical flow in what you do inside the cockpit and feel free to double-tap the really important things.

Please don't take that as a condescending post, just trying to offer some constructive advice.

I like a paper checklist in a page protector. Do it every time I fly. I tried to memorize a checklist when I first started flying lessons my instructor said don't. Asking why he said sure as shit you will forget something. #-o

Re: MiraCheck Checklist for iOS and Android

I liked the MiraCheck but I already use WingX and FlightPlan Go (and the 2nd one is free). FlightPlan Go just added talking checklists too. Since I'm using that free app anyway with their graphical W&B I might as well just use one app. Thanks for letting us know about MiraCheck, it is a good app.

Re: MiraCheck Checklist for iOS and Android

Hi all,

An FY -- IFR Magazine has a review of this product in its Dec. 2017 issue. This link works for me to see it online.

http://www.ifr-magazine.com/issues/33_1 ... 355-1.html

I continue to use MiraCheck. I have noticed that adding items to my checklist makes me do things that I always forget; like monitoring 121.5 on a second radio. Overall I am very pleased with the product.

I think it is easy for high time pilots to forget how stupid new pilots are. I was taught a long memorized downwind checklist and my examiner told me GUMPS was all I needed. Then I read on here somewhere that a guy flying a 180 should go back to school if he needed a checklist to fly that simple airplane. Between the two comments, I resolved to simplify and commit to memory the essential stuff.

It wasn't bad advice per se, but it was bad advice for me to take to heart. I don't have enough hours to have the muscle/brain memory of doing things right, especially if something happens to throw me off my groove or if I haven't been flying for a while. I'd forget a window or a door latch, or forget to reset the trim after landing. It is a good thing there is no radar coverage around here because I've flown several flights with my transponder off. I landed without flaps one day because there was a helicopter inbound with a long line and I changed my approach routine to afford him some extra time.

I've realized that I'm a guy that needs checklists. In fact, I just finished laboriously tailoring the checklist app within foreflight so I can use it every time I fly. I'll check out MiraCheck because I like the idea of an audible checklist. Besides, saying 'Check' to a bunch of nerdy prompts will make me feel like a real pilot flying a jet.

Zane, for what it is worth, I didn't smell an advert. We all have our pet mods that we like to share. I bought an MT prop on MTV's recommendation and a PAR200 radio on A1Skinner's. Love them both. The mods, not the dudes, though I'm sure they are lovely guys.
