I am wondering what the thoughts are on transitioning (can’t believe I typed that) from 3rd class or Basic Med to the new MOSAIC light sport next year?

Limited to only 2 seats? We fly two seaters

I love in the mountains, so don’t fly at night anyway

My plane easily fits into the Vso limitations

Does anyone see a downside besides no flying through Canada and I get that.

If I didn’t make money with my certs id have gone basic when it first came out.


Per Canada, honestly IMHO you’re not missing much, also not saying to do it, but never had anyone even ask to see my radio operators cert, or anything else for that matter

I’d just go basic and never look back

Go find any doc in the box, have them do the check the sheet and you’re good to go basic, as it should be

When it comes to what their goverment workers have asked clearing their customs, never been asked for really much of anything, which is a nice thing about Canada


For an American not needing a 1 or 2 class medical, I feel the features of Canada vs the risks of the whims of FAA aeromedical, I don’t think getting a FAA medical is worth it just to be able to go to Canada, shy of owning property of having other reasons to go up there multiple times a month

Just one man’s opinion, if it’s only going up once or twice a year, have a buddy act as PIC, or airline/drive/boat/charter up and enjoy the logical/peace of mind of basic med

I know (a little bit anyway) about the proposed MOSAIC,
but I wasn't aware that the details were finalized or that it is scheduled to be implemented next year.

If you qualify for basic med, I'm not sure what the benefit to flying on your drivers license under a light sport license would be.

Personally, I'm super excited for MOSAIC. Especially as it applies to new aircraft manufacture and the maintenance of the existing fleet.

Unfortunately my crystal ball is INOP and I have no idea how it will all turn out.

I did a little reading up on MOSAIC yesterday.
Looks like the proposal as it stands now is that one of the main limitations will be based on stall speed.
A sport pilot will be OK to fly up to a 6 seat airplane, provided it meets the stall speed limits,
but can only carry one passenger.
This seems really stupid to me-- IMHO it should be either no pax, or pax in all the seats.
Guess they figure taking one innocent pax along with you to a fiery death is OK, but not any more than one?
