Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

Can you fit a mountain bike (Or 2) in a Stinson 108-2/3 or a Pacer 20 and 22/20? Not a fold up bike or fat bike. 29er and if you took both wheels off and possible loosened the handlebars etc...

Thanks!

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

Rear seat out, I think I could easily get a 29er in the back of the Pacer by removing both wheels. The bulkhead at the rear of the baggage is slanted upward, making the footprint of the floor smaller than the baggage area 24" up. If you can figure a way to stack stuff, and get it higher, you'd be golden I think.

Pull the seat post, loosen the stem so you can twist the bars 90 degrees, whatever you can do to make the bike less awkward in 3D space.

Can't speak to the Stinson.

Been years since I sold my Stinson but...not gonna put them in a Stinson without the fork off. Even then might be a challenge...

No experience with either airplane, but if you take a bike apart far enough they'll fit in surprisingly small places. Bikes and camping gear...different story.

Back seat area of a stinson -2 or -3 is larger than a pacer if I remember correctly. However, the doors on a stinson...

Both wheels off I could fit 2 fatbikes in the back of my Pacer without the rear seat installed.

Yeah that's the beauty of the Pacer rear passenger door. It's an AWESOME baggage door when the rear seat is out

Another vote for no problem in my Tri Pacer with some santa cruz + specialized enduro bikes and the back seat out.

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

Stinson 108-3 you could fit 2 in probably, but you'll need to take the forks off. I would bet 2 road bikes would fit just fine with just the tires taken off.

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

Here's a shot of my size XL YT Capra Enduro bike in the back of my Pacer. Just had to pull the wheels and strap them against the wall. I turned the handle bars 180 deg to get the bars away from the seat backs as it's a fairly long wheelbase frame. There is a ratcheting rope tiedown over the top of the seat to keep it tightly down on the cross tube.

Image

The second shot shows the full load for 2 days of riding. I had a couple sets of riding gear, pads, helmets, tools, pump etc. Lots of extra room. Could easily fit another big bike, would just need to pull the stem/bars off so the bars don't interfere with each other. My GF's size small enduro bike would slide right in without taking the bars off cause its shorter wheelbase.

This was such a cool trip. I had just gotten my tailwheel endorsement a couple days before and that was the first time I had soloed in 13 years! I was a very rusty private pilot. The trip opportunity popped up unexpectedly. Some buddies were already up in St. George and asked if I wanted to drive up to meet them. I checked the weather, it looked great, so the next morning I was off from Corona, CA to St George, UT. Had a headwind, but 3.5 hrs later I was in St. George with my bike and gear! We rode that day and the next. They dropped me off at the airport after lunch and the same winds were still blowing so I was back in 2.5 hrs. 6 hours of flying sure beat 12 hours of driving!

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

Don't know about the Pacer or Stinson, but my 700C road bike fits in my Maule with the rear tire still on. I do have to remove both tires on my 29" mountain bike, but then it fits easily.

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

As long as we are answering the questions that we choose regarding mountain bikes in planes, rather than the questions that is being asked by the OP #-o , I have gotten three 29ers and three average to large men in my 180. It wasn't uncomfortable, but emergency egress may have been a little challenging with handlebars and forks protruding across the main door areas.

Re: Mountain Bike Pacer/Stinson?

A new answer for an old thread...

I took the tires and seat off my Trek 7200 and stuffed it into the back of my Stinson. It fits, though not comfortably. I've of course removed the rear seats for this. I also covered the greasy parts with a trash bag to save my interior.
