Re: Mowing grass runway

I need to get some advice from my farmer neighbors, or from you all here,

Not sure what weeds you have but I did a number on the dandelions and thistles at our airport with straight 24D low volatile ester last spring. Tordon works good also. Banvel is an option but can drift easily. UAN nitrogen is good for grass but can burn it if too much is applied. The best nitrogen is ammonium nitrate since you don't have to get rain right away but good luck finding that.

I put 400 pounds of nitrogen fertilizer on my runway again this spring. Got a good deal on the fertilizer at $14 per 50 pound bag. The turf is really getting better, but still have a lot of rock picking parties. Very happy with my Ford 8N with a 4 foot John Deer brush hog. Just closed on the Clear Creek house last week. We are very blessed.

I need to get some advice from my farmer neighbors, or from you all here, as to what I can do to my native grass strip to pump it up a bit. NOT looking for a lawn, just something that would encourage what is already there. What that fertilizer due to any weeds, encourage them or does the stronger grass keep them down? I notice a bare spot later in the season, where I touchdown every time. I don't like seeing that as I am concerned with erosion as it is on a slope. The good thing is the slope has a dual fall line/ side slope, so it runs off to the south and not straight down the length of the strip. 18' wide and 400' long, so I can probably afford to fine tune it a bit. I've got a nice little spray rig for the Kubota, with a PTO driven pump, 50 gallon tank, and 10' of coverage. So far I've just used it for killing grass in town at my crane yard.

I have initiated a new procedure the last few landings, rather then aim for the same spot every time, I am landing way short and then fast taxiing up to the hangar, on the theory that it's the tires touching down initially that causes the wear, not so much the rolling afterwards.

courierguy,

I'd recommend going to your local McGregor agri-chemical Company or similar. They offer a lot better prices than the local farm/hardware stores. Anyway I'd also recommend dry nitrogen fertilizer (lots), and liquid "Curtail" for weed control. I apply dry fertilizer and seed with a $70 spreader from Wal-Mart. It pulls behind my ATV, and a sprayer from the local farm store for liquids.

Enjoy,

James

Fertilizer is second on the list for what you need there. You live in a very arid region. Vegetation grows and builds slowly in that type of climate, and once damaged , takes a long time to repair. Hence the erosion from the landings. What You need is irrigation to build strong root structure. You don't need to water it like your trying to grow hay, just provide enough water to give it an improved sustained moist environment a little better than what it's getting now.
Without water, fertilizer is useless and can be toxic.

Also soil in arid areas can be high in PH and certain minerals due to the accumulation of chlorides, carbonates and boron. Irrigation can help leach these from the soil.

That Torro looks too short, and designed for going around trees.
Try a used diesel with a belly mower. I do this 1/4 mile in an hour or less 62" deck.
You have to run to keep up with it.. 20 HP
It seems I cant use a URL pic from BCP ? happy day

Oh boy. Horse drawn mower. Steel wheels. I've spent a LOT of time riding one of those behind a tractor. Don't forget to use the Dump Rake.

I had a dump rake as an ornament in the front of my place in Worshington. When we sold out the buyer demanded we remove it???? I was in AK at the time so I called a neighbor and he was glad to get it.

TxKiger wrote:Hey guys,

I've been mowing our 2,200 foot 100 foot wide grass runway with a Ford 8N tractor and a brush hog. Unfortunately each time I mow it the trailing wheel rips up chunks of the ground so its been difficult keeping a nice runway so I decided to go another route which may or may not have been a good idea. I picked up a Toro 3100 Fairway Mower at auction for a really good price. I'm not sure how well this will maintain a runway, but I figure if it can mow fairways all day then it can handle my runway. Thoughts?.... I'll be using it sometime this week so I will update you with my first impressions. Here's a picture of a similar mower.

That's a really nice mower, and it will produce a wonderful finish. It won't be as fast as an 18' bat wing, but it will look terrific. Sharp blades will be important. And proper blade adjustment will be, too. Bear in mind that golf courses cut their turf often, taking off a little bit at a time. If you wait too long between cuts you might find it slow going without first setting your cutting height higher.

I would start at the NRCS office. Do some soil sampling first, then sit down with the boys and get something planted for your region ie: drought tolerant types

Hello Backcountry Pilots,

Just some pictures. Sometimes hard work really pays off. I can't even get my own kids to show up at my runway rock picking parties. However, landing on your own airstrip is priceless!
