Muffler to go along with A185F acorn system

Hey folks!

I have a 185F amphib with newish acorn HD risers, thinking I'm going to be putting a new muffler on, what is the top dog in this arena without going into modifying the lower cowl??

Thanks guys!

Dunno if the Acorn unit is some sort of hotrodded muffler or not, but FWIW I just recently bought a pair of brand new PMA'd mufflers for my 53 C180 from Aerospace Welding. Very nicely made, and less money than at least one of the other exhaust outfits wanted for OH'ing my old ones. Dunno exactly what they offer for the C185, but here's a link.

I just replaced the stock muffler can with an Acorn without flame tubes. This is the stc version. No more flame tube issues to deal with again. It has thicker end plates and a different tailpipe construction. Much more robust design but still plug and play. I already had replaced the manifolds with Acorns last year. Comes with the seaplane extension. About the same noise level as a stocker on a Pponk built IO-550. My best friend who has owned a fab shop for 40 years, looked at the welding and said it is absolutely beautiful and is first class. Acorn makes the best exhaust and its worth every dime you pay. Nysley stuff is pretty good, but Acorn is bullet proof and built for the long haul. Try it, you'll like it.

Exactly what is the purpose of the flame tubes / flame cones?
From what I've seen, they're mainly there to sooner or later start coming apart & causing problems,
so you have to replace the muffler. #-o
So eliminating them would definitely seem to be a good thing.
But there's gotta be more to it than that?

done and done, just ordered the acron STCed muffler and shroud.

Hoping the tail pipe doesn't hang down too far

Any good tips or links for polishing? Corny I know, but Id like to get this thing a little blinged out.

Isn't your plane on floats? That hung down extension is a seaplane extension and technically required.

Also polished exhaust take a lot of upkeep on seaplanes, as soon as they get splashed while at operating temps they get discolored there.

The tailpipe is the standard seaplane length. In my conversation with Acorn, they said that the muffler can without flame tubes didn't hold as much heat at low power settings. It was more of an issue perhaps with a carb type engine producing enough carb heat in fridged conditions. With an injected engine, especially a big bore IO-550 its a non-issue. I can't tell the difference as far as cabin heat is concerned.

True

I still think Ill polish it up a bit, as nice as the acorn stuff is, it just has a raw finish, even a little splashed probably would look a little better I think

Splashed polishd stainless

Factory acorn

Wonder if there is any type of clear I could put on it to prevent the splash marks :-s

Re: Muffler to go along with A185F acorn system

Anyone ever do a full exhaust system ceramic coating??

http://www.jet-hot.com/enthusiasts

seems like it would help with corrosion, temps and not too bad on the eyes ether.

I've had ceramic coating done on my snowmobile pipes. It works great. Stays shiny and didn't need the extra heat shield anymore. I've never thought about it for A/C before, but it sounds like a pretty good idea..
