My Alaska

In winter climates I'd never consider a door that didn't have a full length horizontal truss so that no ground tie is needed due to problems with frost heaving and icing as well. In northern Minnesota, having 2" extruded polystyrene buried a couple feet down under and around the hangar pretty well solves the frost heaving part, might go thicker there. I built a hydraulic door, HiPower is nice, so is Schwiess bifold with nylon straps.

Beautiful place you have there!
It's no colder on the Kenai Peninsula than it is in Northern Minnesota I bet. Great Hangar!

Re: My Alaska

What time did you get into Anchorage Phil? That’s the exact site I saw out of the C-5 today. We landed here around 3pm... unfortunately I’ll be leaving in the morning. Looks like it was a great day to fly in Alaska.

Hey Rob good to hear from you. 1:30PM was when I got to ANC. Apparently got a few inches snow the two weeks I was down in Texas, enough to get back on skis which will happen Tuesday evening. Let me know next time you are going to be up here and have some play time and we will go fly.

Re: My Alaska

Last night a new visitor joined the family. Sure was fun watching this guy/gal bound around those long legs. Was funny, before they showed up I was looking around admiring "my" piece of heaven. Was nice to be brought back to reality, immediately it was Mama's piece of heaven and I was the visitor.

Re: My Alaska

Yesterday while I was sitting in my cabin nursing my month long cold/flu/pneumonia thing we spied four Lynx walking across the bottom of the short runway. A father, mother, and two teenagers. I had no time to grab my iPhone and take a picture but it was an awesome sight to behold.

Today I'm sitting at my desk, still nursing the cold/flu/pneumonia thing, but doing some work on my computer as well. I look up and there right in front of me crossing the driveway are the two teenage lynx. Before I can pick up my iPhone one steps into the woods. But the other has a different personality, a curious personality. He (or she) spies the finest bush plane ever, the SQ2, in the hangar (or perhaps it's just a Ford fan) and instead of going into the woods it headed to the hangar. We watched as it walked around and smelled the truck, then went over and checked out the SQ2. All the while my finger hovered over the alarm button on the Ford's key fob just in case it decided to jump up on the truck and then onto the plane. But shortly its curiosity was satisfied and it departed the hangar. What a privilege to have seen these cats two days in a row. We surely hope they make their home somewhere on the property.

That's what I thought...
it's checking to see if you're OWL STOL equipped.

Re: My Alaska

What a special evening at the Flying W Ranch.

Young snowshoe hares bounding a bout (or is it about?).

A family of Sand Hill Cranes, the baby with short stubby wings. Then noticed one of the parents posturing and charging the side of the runway.

A bit later these showed up between the cabin and the top of Runway 05 (in the background). I'm smiling for sure.

Nice! I love moose, my favorite animal to see and eat. Just had the last from the freezer this week. Almost counting down the days until I move back to AK!

Re: My Alaska

A long time ago when I was in a place like this with no wind or any other sound after a while (If I was also completely quiet) I could hear my blood flowing through my veins. Unfortunately at this time in my life, and for at least the last 25 years, I hear the non-stop hiss of the air slowing leaking out of my head.

As I sat there today in the warmth of the sun, basking in my solitude, I found myself daydreaming that the rest of humanity no longer existed, and that this is what all the earth would be like.

Well, at least there is Alaska. :-)
