Re: My Alaska

Phil,

To be picky, what you ran into is actually freezing fog, not ice fog. Waaaaay too warm there for ice fog.

And, I'd much rather fly in ice fog than freezing fog, trust me.

Good to know. Everyone around here is calling it ice fog. Freezing fog makes more sense. Crazy how fast it builds up!

Freezing fog essentially consists of supercooled water. Without condensation nuclei or an airplane to stick to, the water droplets don't freeze. Fly into that stuff with an airplane and the disturbance of the water droplets cause them to instantly freeze and stick. Freezing fog typically occurs around -10 to -15 or so F. Sometimes it occurs colder, but rarer.

Ice fog on the other hand consists of suspended ice crystals. Lots of condensation nuclei such as engine exhaust at very cold temps provide a trigger for water in the atmosphere to condense on. Hence, common in cities. But temps need to be very near -40 for ice fog to form, and usually colder.

Folks in Anchorage think they live in a cold environment.....but not so much. :D

In any case, freezing fog is scary shit, cause it's just looking for something to stick to, as you found out. Ice fog obscures visibility, but otherwise is pretty benign to airplanes. Not good if you have emphysema, though.

Re: My Alaska

Well tomorrow I leave Alaska again and head down to Texas. Next trip up will be late March and find me driving my Rebel up.

Airplane is at the mechanics, PMags are out to be inspected. Blades are headed back to Whirl Wind to be inspected and repainted. So decided to spend yesterday and today exploring on the ground.

Yesterday drove to Homer, had lunch and walked around the docks.

Last night one of the moose that frequent my place walked by after eating anything she could find.
Image

Today decided to drive to Seward. Flown there many times but never visited the town. Quaint and mostly closed for the winter.
Image

Turned around and looked out to sea.

I think I need a different sign. One of three groups of moose that frequent my strips.

Oh, they are cute! But I'm glad they weren't there when we were there. Allen might not have gotten away with crossing the runway behind them!

I started a number of projects this summer. This is the first one that is finished. Decided on using fletch lumber to keep the woodsy cabin feel. Built by akgreg. Looks great.

Yep. 200 gal is the minimum delivery. First price break is at 400 gal, next at 1,000 gal.

Re: My Alaska

Decided to add some new signs to the runway. More out of fun, but the moose do cross and occasionally loiter on the runway. :-) You need to zoom in to really see the signs. I've seen caribou in the immediate area but not on my land. If I ever do be fun to add those signs too.

Looking great, Phil. FWIW, not all caribou signs are created equal. If you're ever driving south from Cantwell (or flying real low ;)) , they have caribou signs on the highway that look like real caribou. Others you see around look like poor clip-art!

Thanks DP.

Based on the critters that use my runway I could also put up signs for Sandhill Cranes, Turkeys, Feral Cats, Feral Dogs, and lost pet bunny rabbits. We did have live caribou signs on the Sterling Highway during Road Whale season. Okay, they were actually reindeer you could pet - for a price of course. :D

Re: My Alaska

Barnstormer, Just got back from staying a week in Sterling. Fishing for salmon. Fishing was good and the view was awesome. Already looking for a lake cabin on Longmare or Scout to put a 180 on floats for a couple months in the summer. I wished I would have studied a little more about where you were at. We drove around every airstrip we could find looking for homes for sell. Love the area. My son got his float rating over in Moose Pass with Vern while we where there. I will be back, thats for sure

Re: My Alaska

Stolhunter, I'm about 2 miles east of Scout lake, next to Scooters. Glad you had a good time and cool about your son getting his float rating. See you up here next year. [emoji16]

Re: My Alaska

Keep me in mind if you hear of a good deal on a cabin. Trying to find a good late 50's model 180 to put on floats and then sell my 182 rg. Beautiful awesome spot. When you get back down my way in Texas, maybe we can find the time to sit around and talk about flying opportunities up there. I am sure there are many
