I too just got insurance quotes for more than double last summer. And, I have added more time, time in type, TW, and High performance. I think the Insurance has priced me out coupled with extreme inflation in current inventory prices. Clean low to mid time Maules with a few upgrades are now 85k airplanes. I def. missed the boat

Insurance prices are as crazy as real estate or airplane prices. My rates went up so much I dropped insurance. Now I’m trying to decide if I’m willing to risk flying without insurance or if I am going to pickle the airplane and store it for a while or sell it. More than likely I’ll do what every other lukewarm owner does, nothing.

I talked to several insurance brokers this past few days. BWI is def the more easy to have a frank conversation with here in AK. At one point do they price themselves out of the market? Most pilots I know do not have insurance due to the increasing rates. Now I'm sure more are going to get that sticker shock and drop it. Seems like it has a counter productive effect.

Whee,
Yes, that is what I have done in the past. Budget constraints and other issues caused me to pickle my plane a couple of times over the years. I went with just liability at times just so I could keep flying. Now that both the wife and I are retired, the budget has definitely taken a hit, but then our expenditures have decreased also. Luckily, my 'toys' are paid for so that helps considerably. I know if I sell, I will never get them back. You put a lot of time and energy into your plane, hold onto it if you can.

Thread drift, but I agree 100%. It’s gotten much more difficult to get in to a decent airplane, while getting out of one is practically effortless. If you want out, think about it long and hard, because there are barriers to re-entry that didn’t really exist ten years ago.

Avemco give me a somewhat reasonable quote 5 days ago. They have now turned around in more than doubled it....
Falcon responded to me today and stated they would not be quoting in Alaska at this time.
BWI definitely treats you well but that doesn't help the rates.

My insurance just renewed... It went up about 20%. The broker told me he tried to shop around for other underwriters, but their prices were 40% higher, and 80% higher. Fortunately, the "lowest" (least exorbitant?) price is still affordable. Much higher, and I would have to consider going liability-only... If it ever gets to the point I can't afford liability insurance, I'll have to stop flying.
