Narco display fix

The display in my Narco Com 810 TSO has been getting worse & worse.
It dims to nothing at night, and even just on a dark day or in the hangar.
I finally decided to address the problem.
Did some research & determined that I needed Narco display p/n 50226-0001.
Found a few on ebay for $200-250, but I ended up buying one from DigiKey.com.
Their p/n 541-1411-ND, $146 delivered.

Easy to install- remove freq knobs w/ an itty-bitty allen key,
then remove radio faceplate by removing two small plastic screws on each end.
Then gently slide the old display (a flat piece of glass) up a bit, then out and away from radio.
Slide new display into place & reassemble.
Nothing to it.
FWIW I talked to a couple local radio guys, either one would have nicked me a c-note to do it.

Re: Narco display fix

Good to know. There aren't a lot of avionics shops that will tackle the innards of Narcos these days. For the last few years of Narco's existence, they insisted on doing the shop work themselves, so a lot of avionics shops quit trying. Now parts are getting scarce, too. FWIW, the avionics shop at Alamosa, CO, will still work on Narcos, the last I heard. One of mine had lost its nav side--only worked within about 3 miles of a VOR--and the display was spotty. They fixed it, $600 later. I think if I face another multi-hundred bill on a Narco, I'll be really tempted to replace it with a TKM.

FWIW, the sidetone adjustment screw is hidden under the faceplate too, just to the left of and below the freq knob.

A little bit of adjustmdnt goes a long way with this one. I turned it a bit by mistake when i readjusted the dimmer screw after the display replacement-- I thought i got it back where it was but the sidetone about blew me out of my socks when i made the first post-repair radio call.

Re: Narco display fix

So how did you find the part number of the display? Was it as simple as a part number on the display itself or was the service manual required?

Re: Narco display fix

Got the narco p/n from an installation manual for the radio.
I either found the manual online & downloaded it,
or else somekne (from this site maybe) had it & scanned me a copy.
Cant recall which.

Re: Narco display fix

The displays are made by Vishay-Dale. If you surf their datasheets you'll find displays for several Narco radios. The Narco part numbers are listed right on the datasheets.
