Im done with GoPro , too many failures.

Re: New action camera?

What do you mean by fail? Do the internal electronics fail, or is it the battery, or other?

Re: New action camera?

Shuts off with no reason, sometimes just doesnt record, sometimes connection fails, sometimes they just freeze.
I do the updates.
Have replaced batteries.

Missed many great videos because of this.

Re: New action camera?

Not sure which model you're using, but the 3's and 4's will overheat and shut down:

https://gopro.com/support/articles/hero4-black-camera-temperature-and-performance-in-high-performance-modes

Lots of info can be found by googling "gopro overheating".

I put the skeleton case on mine, and it helped, however it still shuts down and restarts about every 17 min when mounted on the wing strut. I'm using a backpack battery on a Hero3+, FYI.

Others on here will probably have ideas on what to do that might fix your problems.

Otherwise, the Garmin Vibe gets good reviews.

Been using a Garnim VIRB for 1 & 1/2 years, flying, scuba diving, and in between, no problems at all so far.

Re: New action camera?

I had the same kinds of issues with a GoPro as well. I LOVED their concept of a remote: Mount the camera on a wing strut, turn it on, but not recording, the plan being to start it with the remote instead of having to record the taxi, runup, takeoff and transit to wherever. BUT, the thing turns itself off after some period with no activity.

Obviously, those cameras were designed for skiers, skydivers, etc, not for use on airplanes. Just as obviously, some folks have got them to take some really magical video footage.

But, for my money, the Drift cameras are far easier to use, and MUCH more reliable for aviation use.

I sold that GoPro, and good riddance....fiddling with those things only to have nothing useful at the end of the day isn't worth it. Drift you turn on, it has a reliable remote, takes good video. Very little fiddling.

Re: New action camera?

I've been using the drift cameras for several years now. Never had a glitch, even in temps down to -10F. Love the remote stop/start feature and the rotating front element and sensor. Makes it sooo much easier to mount on a plane. My strut mount consists of a stick on clip and safety cord. No ball mount needed, just rotate the base till it's pointed where I want, then rotate the lens to level the image. :)

I recently picked up a second one so I can sync them to the same remote and shoot multiple angles with the same time stamp for easy splicing later.

Edit: Here's one of my videos with my old Drift HD170. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJjFO0pE6VE

Re: New action camera?

I've used the gopros for skydiving quite a bit and they have worked well most of the time. Seems like they start getting a little funny when they get updated. I'm going to try out one of the 360fly panoramic view cameras and see how the 360 degree video comes out.

Lakloey?

Nice to see videos of the old digs. Thanks.

I've got a Garmin Virb. I like the video quality, though I've not published a video using it yet. It can apparently be controlled through an app on your phone, though I haven't tried that yet, either.

Re: New action camera?

Has anyone used one of the Kodak 360 4K cameras yet?
Looks pretty wild!
Just about ready to order one, but sure would like to hear about it first hand.
Thanks in advance.

Re: New action camera?

Was looking into the Garmin Virb XE but doesnt seem to have 4K

The Kodak looks good, But the desing will make it difficult to adapt a filter , to get rid of the propeller in the video.

Plus the kodak is a 360 degree VR camera, which is a neat deal if you need it, but generally pretty special purpose.

Just thought the 360 might have some interesting views from atop of my drone or airplane!

Yup, absolutely it will. Maybe one on the top and another on the bottom even.

Re: New action camera?

Sony Action Camers and Go pros have the best quality (their high end models). The new Action cam is 4k. Has bettery battery life vs. go pro, and some other decent features. Remote control wrist bracelet thing works pretty well (I have one for my 1080p version action cam).

Worth looking into anyway, watched a lot of reviews on the new 4k model vs go pro 4 black, and it's really good http://www.amazon.com/Sony-FDR-X1000V-4K-Action-Cam/dp/B00R1COCT0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453405891&sr=8-2&keywords=sony+action+cam+4k

Well, just sent away for the 360 4K, will see what happens.
When I get home I have a couple of GoPro's I am going to sell.
Will be first part of march.
