I can hook you up with a hell of an awesome 150hp Clipper...
Even better..... I can't believe I'm already plotting my next escape. I'm pretty sure though that if the exemption goes thorough I'll be looking VERY hard for a 150hp fixed pitch Pitts. Just too much fun to live out a lifetime without having one even just long enough to wad it up.

A Pitts?

Now you are talking. I owed one like that for 14 years. Flew it over 400 hours. Most fun you can have with your pants on!!

I remember you writing about that Bob. You even used to CAMP in one. Now that's tough. I don't think the Pitts is ever far from top of mind for me. I seriously thought about buying a project, making the wings equal span, and putting a Rotax 100 hp in there. LSA. My distaff portion's first question was; "where do I sit".

My Pitts...

...weighed just over 700 lbs. What do you need for LSA? The 0-290 is 125 H.P. Does that work? Cheap and available.

It's all about stall speed. If memory serves it's 45 knots or 51 mph. With the M6 airfoil and the scanty wing that's tough to do unless you get the empty weight (for most pilots) down to about 600 pounds. In all other ways the S1 qualifies.

I think a guy could get to 51 mph with an 0-200, composite prop, Stewarts covering and obsessive GW control. I'm a 155lb dude. I'd have a better chance at success than some I know.

You might look into a Murphy Renegade. Almost a Pitts but fits into the LSA specs with 2 holes and a 912. I've flown one and with my 200 lb butt and another 150 lb pilot, it was still very spirited. And that was only an 80 horse 912.

But have you flown a Pitts? If not, do yourself a big favor and book some time. You don't have to go upside down and inside out to become spoiled for life. There just isn't ANYTHING you can do with your clothes on that is quite so nice as messing around in a Pitts!! I spent a week with Budd Davison back in '03. Without a doubt some of the best aviation money I ever spent.

Re: New Airplane: Get'er'done

EB,

Maybe something was wrong with my S1 but it quit at something like 70 kts. or better. No way to slow it down without tons of power and a steep nose angle. That would result in landing tailwheel first with the mains a foot or more of the ground. Pretty hard on the tailwheel.

It had the original flat bottom wings. Whatever. Just my experience. I would never have taken it off airport. Too high touchdown speed and itty bitty tires. Landed on grass of course many times. Super short field performance on take off for sure.

May have mentioned it before but my Pitts would pull the mains off first and launch with the tailwheel still on the ground after about a 100 ft. roll if I kept the stick back in my gut. Sort of like a blown wing. It would also hover at about 10 kts(zero indicated) forward speed with lots of power on and the nose at about a 20 degree pitch.

Have fun.

I have. It was a great experience. But It will never be LSA. The Murphy is only fairly comparable but in no way an equal to a Pitts. It is however LSA compliant. And a heck of a lot of fun. My acro days are long over. As in.. the older I get, the better I was.
There is a guy here locally that does upset training in a Pitts. He will sign off your bi-annual after the flight. 2 birds with one stone.
