New Cables

I have not been able to pick up my new plane purchase due to poor weather, work schedule. Still looking like crap for another week too.
My immediate maintenance is the replacement of Throttle, Mixture and Carb Heat Cables.
Would everyone agree the way to go here is the McFarlane replacement parts?
( 1958 Cessna 172 ).

Re: New Cables

Hey rod, I don't know that you have many other options besidea mcfarlane.

I would suggest that if they are just stiff, lube them. I've done this two ways, the first is to spray some lube(i like lps 2 or tri-flo) in the end of the cable then use and air nozzle to force the lube up the cable. Repeat this process several times to get the cable lubed throughout the entire length. The second method I've used is to remove the cable from the airplane and soak it in a tub of 5606 hydraulic fluid overnight.

The cables in my '56 are very simple(guessing they are the same as yours), just a steel wire in a steel sleeve, so there isn't much to wear out, however they do get dry. My cabin air and cabin heat cables tend to hang un and get stiff, but that is usually the flapper/slide mechanisms that need lube, not the cable.

Good luck, you got my number if you need help or have questions.

Re: New Cables

I replaced both the throttle and mixture with McFarland parts on my '77 Wagon when I changed out the engine. I like their parts alot. Nicely made and great value. Friend of mine saw my cables as they where going in and was crying the blues because he had replaced his cable recently from another manufacture. He wished he had gone with the McFarlands. =D>

Re: New Cables

Does anybody have a coupon or discount code for McFarlane Aviation?

Thanks in advance,

Re: New Cables

Discount codes or coupons for McFarlane are not typical. It sometimes pays to shop some of their dealers. Dealers will often sell at less than MSRP, but McFarlane will never short circuit their dealer network. Aviall is a dealer, so if you have a relationship there you might do better.

Re: New Cables

Cessna Pilot Association members get a 5 % discount on McFarlane produced parts which should include these. Membership is a little steep at $55 a year but may be worth it if you need several things.
