New Desser 31 Opinions

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: New Desser 31 Opinions

This question probably shows my massive ignorance, but....

Has there ever been any discussion of using this type of tire design on aircraft, especially say smaller experimental back country flying type planes? It solves some of the issues discussed here, but probably creates a lot of other problems ? I don't know.

Just curious.

That said, unless Desser acquires STCs for these tires they won't sell as many as they might. Good luck getting field approvals.

As far as shearing a valve stem.....the difficulty totally depends on where the valve shear occurs. A maintenance facility right there on the field? Not TOO big a deal. Then again, it may be.......a story:

As far as field approvals go its not that bad, I know 2 people who just got field approvals for 26" GoodYears which aren't approved for too many planes. The Feds aren't as gun shy about tires along as they are TSO'd and meet the load requirements, ICAs are fairly simple for a tire.

That may be true in your part of Alaska. Try getting field approvals in the rest of the world......and not all FSDOs have been very consistent on FAs as well.

And, I'd bet that AK Bushwheels sells more tires in the lower 48 than they do in Alaska these days.

Re: New Desser 31 Opinions

You guys should email Desser to tell them to produce a 35'' or + tire. I do, once every 3 month...

But about the 10'' wheels? Where could someone find a cheap aircraft 10'' wheels with conical bearing??

If I didn't already my 35'', I would look to build an adapter to fit some atv aluminum wheels. Would be relatively easy, but time consuming, on my lathe.

Goldspeed ATV Beadlock
Goldspeed Racing Products has just introduced a new aluminum beadlock for MX, off-road, XC and desert applications. The new wheel is unique in that it’s a super-tough, heat-treated, .190-thick aluminum construction wheel mated with a lightweight, ultra-durable carbon beadlock ring. Goldspeed has also one-upped the standard by offering both front and rear wheels with a universal bolt pattern, allowing for one set of wheels to fit all current sport quad models. GPS currently offers the Goldspeed beadlocks in a box set that will include mud plugs and a set of lightweight, heat-treated, 7075 aluminum lug nuts at no additional charge. Available in 8×8, 9×8, 10×5 or 10×5.5 sizes.

Re: New Desser 31 Opinions

5.5" wide probably won't be wide enough. 10" ATV wheels are usually for front wheels which are narrow…

Check these out for the 27" Dessers.

Re: New Desser 31 Opinions

I do not think there is a patent on design but it does require a different approach to making a tire.

I would not use a tire that can shear a valve stem or slip on the wheel and risk my airplane for a few thousand dollar savings. If you need a Bushwheel there is no substitute for it as of today.

If you just need a tire to land on grass and dirt I am sure a Dresser is going to be fine. You are not going to run that tire at 3 psi like I do my 35" ABW and get away with it.

That is the key word...
I would go so far as to say, most guys who own bushwheels could get away with something less, they don't NEED them. It's just a cheap insurance policy or even just for looks... Heck, I don't NEED them either, I've proven that!
