New Flight Guide Sucks

Too big, the old one used to fit in a small pocket in bag, now I need two for same area.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

Agree, they blew it on the new format. Half the info, twice the size (and price) of the old one. No place for it in my 12.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

Flight Guide used to be one of those consistent things I could just count on but, they have messed up my order twice the in the past two months and I much prefered the old format.
May be the excuse I needed to buy an Ipad.

Have as much Fun as is Safe, and Keep SMILIN! GT,

AOPA Airports/Powered by ForeFlight

I like the info and lay out a little more than flight guide, I have both. Tim you are an AOPA member right? Membership has its privileges. The membership alone is cheaper than an annual subscription to Flight Guide.

AOPA members who use an Apple® ™ iPhone® or iPod® touch can have direct access to AOPA Airports on their devices. AOPA has partnered with ForeFlight, a leader in aviation applications for the iPhone and the iPod touch, to offer the complete directory as a download that is free to AOPA members.

As with the AOPA Airports web site and publication, data in the ForeFlight app cover airport info, FBOs, airport services, and more. Features include a download manager for keeping the data up-to-date every 56 days, thousands of airport diagrams, the ability to save favorite airports and recently viewed airports, and find nearby airports.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

Last year when my Flight Guide subscription was up for renewal I called them to squawk. They could not care less about what I had to say. After 20 plus yrs I did not renew. For the time being I carry the AOPA's Airport Directory. Will see how that works. I wish everybody would bitch up a storm and get the FG people to go back to what worked fine before, grrrrrrr.

Liked the old size. Wish they wouldn't fix what isn't broken.
Now I will be flying with an out of date little book.
Damn.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

I also called Flight Guide and told them what I thought of their new product!!
Also told them I would not renew as space is a premium in my plane..would have to haul around four of their big books just to cover what the two little books (West & Central) did. I have been using their old guide with two books for 15 years, renewed every 6 months..why change a good thing?!!
Bitch!, Bitch!, Bitch!!

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

And AOPA has a pretty swanky flight planner too.

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

So, what do all you REAL backcountry pilots with IPads do for ELECTRONS when that battery runs down after four days away from a tit to suck on?

What's wrong with a Chart, an AFD and a Garmin GPS?

Re: New Flight Guide Sucks

Yup.
I'm going back to the AFD... and I'll buy a fresh one every 56 days, if the mission requires.
I figured the folks at AirGuide Publications needed (even more) feedback, so I sent 'em a link to this forum page, along with my respectful comments. You never know... they might scrap their current spiral efforts and reconsider.

I quess that's the same argument of using the Loran instead of just a VOR and ADF. And why would you use a loran when you can use a gps,
I fly with my Garmin 696 and my IPad, along with my Blackberry phone!
I have every terrain, sectional, low fir, high ifr, approach plate, procedure, along with every airport in the united states, motel, fbo, resturant, car rental, can do my flight plan, duats, keep my log book updated, Real time weather with satelite also.
I carry one of those odesy sealed battery's that is hooked up to a 110 volt battery maintainers, has 3 power ports on it along with a USB power port also. Can charge every thing I have from it, roll up solar panel to charge it if need be, with out the battery they are the size of the case that my headphones came in?
Have my sat phone in it's own little pelican case, can charge it up also. I usually have a laptop that I travel with in my bag somewhere and it will hook up to my sat phone if I need
My Spot 11 seams to work pretty well also.
What happens when it all goes to shit? I guess I wait for a day that I can see and fly down stream!
I should know enough when I hit the coast to go right or left.
Why not use what you got. The more tit I can suck on the better it makes me feel!

Nothing wrong with paper if thats your thing. I could hand prop my plane but I like the electric starter. I could throw out my Zulu head set but I like them.

I like paper! Renewable, made in the USA or Canada, detoriates over time in a landfill, was taught to turn pages at a very early age, can be used for toilet paper, to make a fire.

Ipads, Ipods, Idon't like! Made in Asia, half life of plutonium, need engineering degree from MIT to operate, expensive, needs batteries, goes dead when you leave in the rain or drop in the lake, is out dated in weeks with new technology, makes Zane & Rob happy. =D>

One of the reasons I fly into "the backcountry" is to get AWAY from people with generators.....

And, M6RVwhatever.....who the hell is talking about using loran??? I gave up on loran before most folks in aviation had actually used one...because the accuracy sucked. I was possibly one of the very first pilots to actually USE panel mounted GPS (government "Public Use" aircraft, with a prototype from Trimble), and never looked back.

I use a few gadgets, but I've had every electronic device I've ever owned go TU on me, generally at the least convenient time....

In any case, I carry a "smart" phone--which I am learning to really dislike--and it has weather. It also kills a battery in a very short time. Turn it on when needed.....if you have bars, take off and fly FURTHER into the back country....
