Re: New Prop for C180

Basically there is no difference. The hub indexing is the same, in fact a prop shop can stamp the hub either way, depending on which blades are being used. From memory, without having the blade spec book I believe the width, thickness and angles were the same, with the exception of a slight face alignment change.

Performance wise you would not be able to tell the difference. I believe the low pitch setting was maybe a half degree steeper on the C201 with 90DA- over the C203 with 90DCA- blades.

The difference is similar to that of the old threaded style C50 with 90A versus C66 with 90AT blades, same hub, blades nearly identical. The threadless style propellers are not nearly as repairable as the older threaded with the steel ferrule screwed on the end. (I'm speaking of prop strike) However they are much lighter, much easier to work on, and design wise a great improvement.

It's hard to beat a McCauley...... :D

Re: New Prop for C180

Here's a couple links with some good McCauley c/s info. Page 18 of the first link has a breakdown of what the McCauley model number represents.

This second link is a McCauley application guide, and includes STC & governor info.

I have a McCauley owners manual (or similar) I keep in my C180 shop manual at the hangar. I'll check it out today and post any pertinent info it may have.

Re: New Prop for C180

The first of the two links I posted has a model number section, but the model numbers shown are unfamiliar to me. No C203, etc. The McCauley prop operators manual has a nifty de-coder for the model numbers that I am familiar with, but although I can scan it I can't seem to post it here. It's a pdf, it won't post, but I can't seem to scan it as a jpeg. Anybody wanna school me on posting it here as a pdf?

Re governors, from the 1962 & earlier Cessna series 100 service manual:
"McCauley & Hartzell propellers which "sense" differently, since boosted oil pressure increases blade pitch of McCauleys & decreases blade pitch of Hartzells".

Re: New Prop for C180

Hi Mudder,

One other thing to keep in mind when it comes to props, especially if you ever are forced into an engine upgrade, is its ability to be used on another application should the need arise. I have an 88" C203 bolted onto my A engine. Versatile prop, listed on the type certificate as approved for all configurations for the A/J/K/L/R/S engines and airframes except the 0470U, best I can tell. My point being, it's comforting to me to know that when the day comes to upgrade engines, I will still be able to use the prop I already own and not have to add that to the long list of expenses.

Re: New Prop for C180

As I was told several times when I was looking for a good used 88" C203, it's not approved for the Ponk conversion so you'll need to buy something else "when" (not if!) you ponk your engine. :P
PS I bought a C201 & don't have any plans at this time for a Ponk in the future.
