If I'm in even a moderately quiet room I can easily hear the results of not taking care of my hearing (tinnitus). If I'm in a loud room I find it hard to pick out conversations from noise. I'm too young for this, but I didn't take care of my hearing.
$300 is a lot. $1,100 is a lot more.
Or, put differently, I increase my cost per hour of flying by $1-3 dollars while being able to hear longer into my old age.
This one is an easy decision for me. I hope some of the young guys will learn lessons from my example instead of teaching themselves through experience. If not the $1,100 Lightspeed PFX, I think it's a foolish decision to not get a 2nd generation (or newer) ANR headset from *somebody*.
Humans are generally pretty bad at making long term decisions. It's like laptops. I will never understand why people try to get the cheapest laptop they can get away with instead of spending more and getting one that "just works". We're talking about something like 10 cents to 35 cents a day price difference for devices that people depend on. That's about the cost of a cup of coffee to get something great instead of something that drives you nuts and keeps you waiting whenever you click the mouse. Hell, the entire amortized cost of a laptop is less than a drink at starbucks and a third the price of a beer at the restaurant.
That, however, is a rant for a different forum.
