Newfoundland / Labrador backcountry vacation.

Hi All,
The wife and I are planning to make up our missed honeymoon in mid September with a trip to explore our Canadian neighbors. Linked is our proposed route of flight.

So I'm hoping that some of you guys have had experience flying up here. I will be taking my Twin Comanche (insert tin can jokes) comfortable in anything that is "improved" and 2500 feet or better. 2000ft is possible light but takes some planning. She's actually a surprisingly rugged backcountry machine and does 170kts!

We are very into the outdoors.....we will be bringing bicycles. We plan on spending some time in in kayaks as well.

If you have ever been up to this area or just have a knowledge of some great spots that are along or nearby my route of flight I would love to have you share them. Although we will be spending a number of nights in our tent we are also interested in any great, not to be missed lodging opportunities.

Thanks in advance for your gems of knowledge.

Lol, without coffee and early in the am when I read the title I thought you were talking about taking your dog with you.

Have a great trip. There are some great B&Bs around Channel Port Aux Basques and on the cost.

If you have time and nice blue skies when you get to Nain, consider going another couple hundred miles north. Maybe as far as Nachvak Fjiord and take a peak at the Torngat Mountains. Try to get up as far as weather, time and fuel allows. Some of the most stunning scenery in all of Canada.

Actually that was my reaction, too--my first dog after I'd become an adult was a half Lab/half Newfie mix--Clinker--great dog, looked a lot like a Golden Retriever except all black, 67 lbs, loyal, great swimmer, energetic, wonderful with the kids, lived to be 18+ with no serious physical problems until the very end when she got cancer. Only dog I've ever known that could actually climb trees--scared the hell out of more than just a few squirrels when they'd taunt her, and she'd get on up the tree to about the 11-12' level before losing traction.

She was born in Illinois, but she took to Alaska like a native--loved the snow, used to burrow in it for several feet before popping up with this silly "look what I did" look on her face.

One time I heard her barking outside, where our youngest was playing. I looked out, and some kids from outside the neighborhood were throwing rocks at our kid, and she was blocking the rocks and protecting him from being hit.

Another time I heard her barking in the back yard--she'd cornered a moose, and they were in some sort of Mexican stand-off--she would bark, the moose would back up, then the moose would jump at her, and she'd back up.

Just after I got my private license, I took the family and Clink in a 172 for a ride over Mt. Spurr to show them an active volcano from above. We had to taxi clear to the end of 24 from the Elmendorf Aeroclub, so she was treating it like the usual car ride, which she loved. Then when we left the ground on the take-off, she let out a howl like "what the heck is happening?"

But she got so used to flying that she loved it. Good thing--after returning to the lower 48, we took many family vacations by air, and she spent all of each flight with her butt between the kids, her front feet on the floor, and her head resting on my flight bag between the seats of the 182.

Lots of stories about Clink and flying--she really enjoyed it almost as much as I do, always at the front door whenever I'd casually mention I was headed to the airport, ready to go.

Cary, bring lots of money, fuel is getting very expensive up that way, we just got back from our camp which is about 60 miles north east of have st piere. Looks like one leg of your trip will take you over the Romain river, HUGE hydro project going on that river! Lots of air traffic around the river due to the project. Seven island is a good place to get fuel and is about in the middle of your long leg home. Watch the weather lots of fog this time of year along the river. We got stuck over 7 days at our camp last year due to rain and fog. You will also fly over a few areas that had some wild fires earlier this year. Have a great trip
