Source?? I haven't heard anything from SAFE, and they'd be on top of that.

Some flight school staff who recently attended a faa training conference. I’d say it’s likely that the info was accurate.

Seems like a mediocre idea at best.

Without a specific definition of 'active,' this cannot be separated from the existing regulations, which provide for automatic renewals for CFIs that have a certain minimum number of students taking checkrides with a certain minimum pass rate.

The actual language:

(i) A record of training students showing that, during the preceding 24 calendar months, the flight instructor has endorsed at least 5 students for a practical test for a certificate or rating and at least 80 percent of those students passed that test on the first attempt

So if an active instructor is one with at least 5 students taking checkrides each 2 year period, and the students are successful 80% of the time or more, this provision already exists. I instruct a fair bit on the side, but not near enough to qualify under that provision, so presumably I am not 'active.'

I think it would be a great idea the way presented in the article. The renewal would still require the same process as before but there would be no actual expiration of the CFI certificate at 24 calendar months time. If you let your CFI lapse you could technically go for a repeat checkride with a DPE but just as easily complete a FIRC. The CFI would reactivate after completing the course and would be good for another 24 calendar months. I got my CFI originally in 1993 and instructed a fair amount early on but eventually let it lapse in 2011 thinking I would never instruct again. I renewed my CFI last November and it was a lot of work getting ready for another checkride. Under this new type of system I would have been able to take the flight instructor refresher course. Would have been a lot easier and faster.
