Nokai Dome, Utah

Overlooking "the great bend" in San Juan Canyon is Nokai Dome. Herbert Gregory compiled a report called The San Juan Country (1938) for the USGS and wrote "The little known red-rock country along Glen Canyon "beyond the clay hills" is a highland area bounded by White Canyon, Red House Cliff, San Juan Canyon and Glen Canyon. For this region of mesas, domes and canyons walled about by lines of cliffs the term 'red rock plateau' seems appropriate."

This was a good one. I was so deep into the background on Nokai that I forgot we were cooking something by the time that steak appeared.

Very interesting video. I know it takes oodles of time to review, edit and produce videos, so thank you for investing your time for all of us!

Thanks for that feedback. I've added that kind of narrative to a couple of them now and people seem to enjoy it. And I enjoy doing the research, so our interests are well aligned!

I'm lucky to work for a university with a well equipped research library, but the 1938 USGS publication I used as a primary reference is available online if anyone is interested. https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0188/report.pdf

That's my impractical beast of a tent. Gotta have a Maule with cargo doors as it's packed size is like five feet long and it weighs 62lbs. But I spent almost a month camping on that trip (Ranger, Nokai Dome and High Sierra Fly-in) so having a queen size bed, a generator and a starlink satellite connection was pretty dang awesome.

That particular tent is a 13' White Duck Bell Tent.

Re: Nokai Dome, Utah

I enjoyed this video where you covered a lot of the country I flew for 20 years. I was based at Moriarty a while where three of the pipelines I flew crossed. The weather in the beginning of your video was good pipeline patrol weather. When I coached basketball at Tohatchi, the Kirtland Tournament usually seeded us with Moab the first game. Thanks.

Absolutely stunning. The west is such a wonderland. Thanks Rich. I can't wait to fly the Maule out there someday.
