Northern California Off Airport Flying

Every month I find my self wanting to call up a couple of flying buddies who live near by (Yuba City, CA) and go out and get some dirt on the tires (river beaches, dirt roads, meadows, etc). But there aren't very many pilots who either have the type of planes to do this or a desire to continue the off airport learning curve (safely). I like the idea of flying with more than one aircraft (fun, safety, support, share technique, etc.) If you're interested comment in this forum or email me at [email protected] and let's coordinate. I drive a MX7-180b Maule.

I don't get down your way very often, but it is pretty country. On my last time down there, I saw a bunch of dry lakes between Alturas and Medford that looked like they would be fun to explore. Probably won't get down that way for many months, but when I can see a trip that way in the future, I'll post something here.

so far so good. Was flying home from work yesterday in OAK and decided to drop in. Perfect weather, calm winds and clear skies. Nice and cool too. Only problem was I was wearing my work (dress) clothes. Got them a little dirty.

Strip is open for a little while longer. Sounds like the weather is going to shut things down on Monday. Until then, we are open for visitors!!!!!!
I'll probably visit again this weekend.

Hey Buzz, here in the middle of the rice fields, we (my dad and I) got a 1700 ft dirt strip. Visitors are welcome anytime, only cautions are power lines at both ends that you have to watch, but other than that, a pretty uneventful landing everytime.

Buzz Delta Airstrip

Hey Buzz,

Can you pass the lat and long for your Delta strip? I may swing down soon and take a pass at it.

I was on the delta today Buzz, so checked your strip in case you see strange tyre marks. Did'nt have a way to call you sorry. Landed North, departed South.

So what did you think?

It works for me. Might be a bit rough for an electric flapped trigear.
Ground was dry and spongy enough to absorb the bumps. Tailwind takeoff to the south will tax some aircraft. Wider now than when I first passed by so lots of room. A strong gust from the west on approach might put a wingtip into the one tree on the right which is across from the tall tree on the west side. The west side tree not an issue. Enough parking room now for a dozen planes I'd guess if you moved them back to the east.
Thankyou for it's use, I'll try to call next visit,
Jeremy

What did you fly in? You are welcome back any time, just hope we don't get too much rain this week. That could put and end to the runway for a few months.

Lost in Cali

I drove down the Sac river yesterday - there is a VERY landable sandbar every mile or so. But, I walked a few of them, saw zero airplanes and zero airplane tracks...

What gives?

If ya can see a sandbar from the highway, it is most likely PRIVATE land.
Gotta get a ways of the roads before trying that around here.
I got the wrong end of a shotgun pointed my way once.

Once was enough.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

Wanabe, you never made it out to delta?

How's anything below the high-water mark private land??

And, from what I've seen, there's not any 'away from the road' left in CA.

dusty,

When you have a 12 gauge stuck in your face, the precise location of private vs public lands becomes a little less important in YOUR mind. Whatever is in the mind of the guy with the shotgun is what's really important at that point :P .

The "ordinary high water mark" is sometimes a bit hard to define, but the other issue you can get into playing that game these days is interrupting someone cooking a little meth.

In which case, you may not actually SEE the shotgun before you are aerated.

I know a pilot who flew stream surveys for salmon for several years on the Trinity River and a couple others. They finally gave it up, after returning to base on three occasions with bullet holes in the airplane  .

I also fully agree on the "Getting away from roads" thing in that state.

I recall a guy getting into trouble flying low over the river.
