Re: Old Guys Still Rock!

My buddy that did 135s to French Frigate Atoll for the State had a Yak. It only had 35 gallons because the communists were concerned the students would defect. All training was far enough from the border to preclude an airborne crossing from home. I think it crashed on Molokai after it was sold. It looked like Tora Tora Tora again when it did a low fly by. Have not seen it for awhile, it must be wrecked by now.

Came from Eastern Europe in a shipping crate brand new for $90K from a military distributer. Very very cool!

I'd be a two sack passenger with Granley. Those are the kind of facial expressions I make when I'm trying to figure out the tip at a restaurant.

Re: Old Guys Still Rock!

One year at the Arlington fly-in I started bsing with this old geezer, while waiting for the crowd to thin out at the nearby display (displaying something I can't even remember but thought important at the time), a few minutes went by and I realized the codger seemed to know a little about airplanes. He was interested in how the Subaru I told him I had in my S-7 was working out and it went from there, as flying talk does.

The crowd had thinned at the display nearby and it also looked like some other people were waiting to shoot the breeze with the senior citizen so I said "nice talking to you" and I meant it as he just seemed like a real nice guy. It wasn't until I was walking away that I realized who I was talking to, Bob Hoover #-o I will NEVER forget his down home good old boy plain folk attitude. I would have never guessed I was talking to the best pilot, ever, and still. =D>

Re: Old Guys Still Rock!

A few years ago at OSH, Bob was giving a talk. He was standing at the mic, and he asked if it was OK if he sat down, saying "I'm almost 90 years old--this standing is getting harder to do." (he's 92 now) At the end of his talk, there was a brief Q&A. Someone asked him if he still did much flying. In his Tennessee drawl, he said, "Oh, I still try to get up in the Extra, maybe 2 or 3 times a week!"

Truly amazing pilot, and a really nice guy from all appearances.

Re: Old Guys Still Roc

Bob had his Yellow P51 Mustang at Torrance back in the 1970's

That was when Frank Robison had a beat up blue hangar on the Eastside. There were corn fields and a farmers market where RHC is now . Bob's famous roll on take-off was spectacular to watch. I brought my seaplane to Torrance to visit my dad, and fly him to Catalina, back in 2009. I few guys came over who remembered Bob and commented they had never seen a cooler airplane than mine since Bob's yellow P51. I was flattered. Amphibs in L.A. really draw a crowd.

My Bob Hoover story

Back in the early '80's a friend of mine was just finishing up building his Skyote, a single seat homebuilt biplane. He and I went to a fly-in in Erie, CO. to met up with a friend of his that had already finished his Skyote, and was bringing it to the fly-in. Bob Hoover was the final act for the airshow. The airshow was just getting started but Bob was still walking around looking at airplanes when he came up to the friends Skyote. He had never seen one and loved the looks of it, went on and on about how he liked it. The owner, half joking asked if he wanted to fly it. He said yes and, here hold my hat. By the time he was ready, the first act of the airshow was up so between the first and second act he took off and left the area to go play for a few minutes. Then between the second and third act came back in and put on a great airshow act in a plane he had never seen before. How's that for a 5 minute self checkout. Needless to say the owner was about to pee in his pants with excitement. Think about standing at an airshow and watching Bob Hoover wring your plane out and saying "Yea, I built that"

Hilarious face. Loved when he just closed his eyes for the one roll. Hey mom, watch this ... Apparently does not go away with age.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.
